Patriots Get Huge Christian Gonzalez Update at Workouts

New England Patriots corner Christian Gonzalez was present at the beginning of voluntary workouts on Monday morning. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported this.

Gonzalez, and a potential contract extension have been topics throughout the course of the offseason. In many cases like this, players don’t necessarily report to voluntary workouts while waiting for a contract. However, Gonzalez was present for the team, as he looks to take another big step in 2026. His presence is certainly important for a Patriots team that is coming off a Super Bowl appearance.

Reiss broke down Gonzalez’s attendance in a report early on Monday morning.

2025 Season Solid For Patriots Corner

The 2025 season was a whirlwind one for Gonzalez. He missed the first three games of the season due to a lingering hamstring injury he suffered at the beginning of training camp. However, he returned in week four and put together a solid season from that point.

The Oregon product was able to set career highs following his return. He recorded 69 tackles and 10 passes defensed over 14 games. With that being said, he suffered a bit of a statistical anomaly. He did not record an interception during the regular season, marking the first time in his pro career that this occurred.  He was still a leader in coverage, as he surrendered only one touchdown over the course of the entire season.

One of the more memorable games of the season for him came against the Cleveland Browns. He allowed zero catches to Brown’s wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, in what was a dominating win for the Patriots.

Gonzalez has covered elite receivers throughout the course of his entire career. He did so again at a high level in 2025. He recorded two pass deflections against Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London, as the Patriots were nearly able to escape with the victory. The corner followed Garrett Wilson on 90% of his routes in a week 11 victory over the New York Jets, and allowed only one catch.

With that being said, there was a particular contest against the New York Giants that saw him struggle a bit. He allowed four catches on five targets in the game. Even still, the Patriots were able to come away with a 33-15 victory in the contest.

He was able to return to form following the Giants game and a bye week, as he allowed zero receptions in three targets against the Buffalo Bills and the season finale. All in all, he put together a strong season and reaffirmed that he was one of the best secondary players in the NFL.

Strong Precedent Set For Patriots

Of course, a potential contract extension still looms large. Nevertheless, it sets a good precedent that the veteran is active and ready to help the team. This could be a big year for the Patriots organization, as they are undoubtedly ahead of their rebuild under second-year coach Mike Vrabel.  It will be interesting to see what this team can do with a tougher schedule and a third-year quarterback in Drake Maye.   The latter took major steps in his sophomore season. Gonzalez figures to be a major playmaker on the defensive side of things.
