Patriots Bolster QB Depth With Signal-Caller Who Knows the System

The New England Patriots made a small yet crucial roster move on Friday, keeping together the quarterback room.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots reached an agreement with Tommy DeVito on a two-year, $7.4 million deal that includes $2 million guaranteed.

This comes as DeVito was set to be a restricted free agent.

DeVito began his career with the New York Giants, signing in 2023 as an undrafted free agent. He went on to start a few games in his rookie season after second-string quarterback Tyrod Taylor was sidelined with an injury, quickly becoming an fan-favorite. He spent 2024 as the third-string quarterback for New York behind Daniel Jones and Drew Lock, but eventually become the starter once again due to Jones’ poor performance.

He returned to the Giants once again at the start of the 2025 season, but was waived as part of final roster cuts and was ultimately claimed off waivers by the Patriots. Throughout the season, he served as the Patriots’ third-string quarterback behind Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs.

He didn’t appear in any games with New England, having appeared in a career 12 games making eight starts and going 3-5, for 1,358 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss: “Increasing tenders for restricted FAs ($3.52 million for right of 1st refusal) leads to multi-year deals like this. In this case, DeVito gives up a chance at unrestricted free agency in 2027. But possibly strengthens his long-range staying power by doing so.”
