Padres Pitcher Undergoes Season Ending Surgery

The San Diego Padres are set to kick off another season with postseason aspirations. The team has made the playoffs the previous two seasons via the Wild Card, as the back-to-back World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers have won the division four seasons in a row. Unfortunately for the Padres, optimism does not seem to be high as the team surrendered plenty of talent after the 2025 season.

Starting pitcher Dylan Cease left San Diego and signed a multi-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. All-Star batting champion Luis Arraez signed a one-year deal with the division rival San Francisco Giants. All-Star closer Robert Suarez signed a three-year contract with the Braves. Finally, trade deadline acquisition Ryan O’Hearn signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

And now, the Padres pitching depth has come into question after injuries have altered their plans heading into the 2026 season.

San Diego Padres Pitcher Bryan Hoeing Undergoes Surgery

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee reported that Padres pitcher Bryan Hoeing will miss the 2026 season after electing to undergo surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right arm.

Hoeing posted on his Instagram a picture following the surgery with the caption, “Not the way I wanted the season to unfold, but necessary for what’s ahead. Even when it doesn’t make sense, I trust God has a plan and this is part of His journey for me. Appreciate Dr. ElAttrache and his staff for taking care of me. Looking forward to being back out there next year!”

Hoeing was acquired by the Padres at the 2024 trade deadline, when the Padres traded for Marlins All-Star closer Tanner Scott. After the trade, Hoeing played a pivotal role in the Padres bullpen as he threw 23.2 innings with a 1.52 ERA. Unfortunately, his 2025 season did not go as expected as he only threw 8 innings for the Padres with a 3.38 ERA.

While dealing with injuries, Hoeing spent most of the 2025 season with the Padres Minor League affiliates as he threw 18.2 innings with a 6.27 ERA.

Regarding the news, manager Craig Stammen said, “It’s a bummer. Because he’s someone that could have really been a big part of our bullpen, filled a lot of different roles, similar to what we saw from him in 2024 and the playoffs, and just how much better he made our team, our bullpen, how well he fit in. We really felt like we had an ace in the hole with him in the pen.”

Joe Musgrove’s Injury Status

It has been a bad week for Padres pitching news, as it was also announced that former All-Star starting pitcher Joe Musgrove will begin the season on the Injured List after missing the entire 2025 season with an injury.

As a result of Musgrove’s unavailability, SB Nation’s Thomas Conroy believes the Padres could turn to free agent pitcher Lucas Giolito. Conroy wrote, “Giolito posted a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts with the Boston Red Sox last season. He can pick up the slack, but the Padres better act fast because Giolito’s market should heat up before Spring Training ends. Several teams are expected to pursue him.”
