Packers WR Called Steelers’ Top Priority Target in Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one glaring need to address this offseason: the wide receiver room, which is widely considered the team’s least productive unit from the 2025 season.

According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, the Steelers should make adding a wide receiver their top priority in free agency, with Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs standing out as the most logical target.

“Romeo Doubs would be a sensible No. 2 choice to pair with Metcalf in 2026. He is coming off a career year with the Packers, one in which he posted a 55/724/6 line despite a litany of competition in a crowded receiving corps,” wrote Kay.

The Steelers are in dire need of a truly reliable and consistent WR2. Behind WR1 DK Metcalf, the most productive wide receiver on the roster last season was Calvin Austin III, who recorded 31 receptions for 372 receiving yards and three touchdowns during the 2025 regular season, per ESPN.

In today’s NFL, high-achieving offenses get significantly more production from their WR2, so it would not be a surprise to see the Steelers be aggressive in free agency to get more production from the position. With $36,803,173 in available cap space, which ranks ninth in the league according to Spotrac, Pittsburgh has the flexibility to make a meaningful addition at the position.

Why Romeo Doubs to Pittsburgh Makes Sense

There are multiple solid players at the wide receiver position that the Steelers could target in free agency, but Doubs coming to Pittsburgh makes a lot of sense considering the fit.

Even with a crowded wide receiver room in Green Bay, Doubs still put up strong numbers with 55 receptions, 724 receiving yards, and six touchdowns, according to ESPN. If the 25-year-old wide receiver joined Pittsburgh, he would be in position to get even more targets, immediately establishing himself as the team’s clear-cut WR2.

“Springing free of that situation and landing in Pittsburgh, where he would immediately stand out as a close second to Metcalf in the pecking order, could easily result in the wideout achieving a 1,000-yard season in Year 5,” wrote Kay.

Doubs will likely be pursued by multiple teams in free agency, as Matt Bowen of ESPN ranked the wide receiver as the 21st-best overall player set to hit free agency in 2026. He would also bring a skill set that complements Metcalf’s strengths nicely in the Steelers’ offense.

“Doubs has the route-running traits and foot quickness to uncover, and he is more than willing to work the middle of the field on in-breaking concepts,” wrote Bowen.

The Advantage of Adding Romeo Doubs in Free Agency

Yes, the Steelers would quickly improve their offense with the offseason acquisition of a player like Doubs, but it would also give the team flexibility to address other roster holes in the 2026 NFL Draft.

With many experts projecting the Steelers to target the wide receiver position in the draft, bringing in a starting-caliber player like Doubs would remove the pressure to select another pass catcher with the 21st overall pick.

Instead, Pittsburgh could focus on adding a top offensive line prospect, bolstering the secondary, or even selecting the quarterback of the future.
