Packers Warned About Potential ‘Brutal Mistake’ This Offseason

The Green Bay Packers and general manager Brian Gutekunst have had a rollercoaster NFL offseason to this point in time.

While they have added some quality players, such as linebacker Zaire Franklin, cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, and return man Skyy Moore, they have also lost quite a few players as well.

Among the notable departures from last year’s roster are quarterback Malik Willis, offensive linemen Elgton Jenkins and Rasheed Walker, wide receiver Romeo Doubs, cornerback Nate Hobbs, pass rusher Rashan Gary, linebacker Quay Walker, and multiple others.

With the 2026 NFL Draft under a week away, the Packers still have quite a few needs to address. They need a backup quarterback, a backup running back, another pass rusher, and help in the defensive secondary. Also, the team could use more offensive line depth.

That being said, Green Bay has been warned about a potential “brutal mistake” that it must avoid.

Packers Given Strong Warning About Potential ‘Brutal Mistake’

Lombardi Ave’s Lior Lampert has warned the Packers against making another “all-in trade” this offseason.

Some of those rumors have circled around New York Giants star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. He has been rumored to be available after recent contract extension talks broke down. Green Bay has been talked about as a potential suitor.

“Even if the Packers wanted to swing for the fences, they aren’t necessarily equipped to do so,” Lampert wrote.

“Brian Gutekunst and Co. are still feeling the effect of sending a monumental haul to Dallas for Parsons. Nevertheless, opportunities have a way of presenting themselves around this time of the league’s calendar, but the Packers can’t be trigger-happy.”

Lampert makes a good point.

Why Green Bay Must Be Cautious About More Big Moves

At the end of the day, the Packers do not have a first-round pick this season or next. They will need to draft well in the second and middle rounds to improve.

While Green Bay doesn’t seem to be far away from winning a Super Bowl, a window can close quickly. Making another blockbuster trade and giving up more draft capital could be the move that brings the Lombardi Trophy back to town. Or, it could be the move that sinks their championship window.

Injuries were the biggest part of the Packers’ demise last season. Micah Parsons went down with a torn ACL, showing just how quickly a blockbuster trade can look different.

Gutekunst and the front office also had to let a lot of players walk in free agency due to cap situations. Adding another superstar would further complicate the team’s financial situation.

They need to be careful, but the team shouldn’t pass on a move too good to be true. However, simply pursuing a trade and overpaying shouldn’t be an option.
