Packers Emerge as Potential Trade Suitor for New Running Back

The Green Bay Packers have quite a few needs left to address as the 2026 NFL Draft continues to draw closer.

While the cornerback position and adding another pass rusher seem to be the highest priorities at this point in time, the Packers also have a couple of offensive needs. Those needs come at backup quarterback and running back.

Earlier this offseason, Green Bay saw quarterback Malik Willis leave town to sign a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. Brian Gutekunst and the front office also decided to part ways with running back Emanuel Wilson.

Both of those positions could be addressed in the upcoming draft. Or, they could target veterans in free agency or on the trade block.

With that being said, the Packers have been linked as a potential trade suitor for an intriguing running back leading up to the NFL Draft.

Packers Named Potential Trade Destination for New Running Back

Matt Johnson of SportsNaut has mentioned Los Angeles Chargers running back Kimani Vidal as a potential trade candidate. That could open up a door for Green Bay to consider.

Following that suggestion, the Packers were brought up as one of the teams who could make sense for him.

The Sporting News has named Green Bay, along with the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants as potential trade fits.

“Green Bay could look to trade for Vidal to pair with Josh Jacobs. The Troy product would add some youth and versatility to the Packers’ running back room.”

Let’s take a look at what the Packers trading for Vidal could bring to the table.

What Would Kimani Vidal Bring to Green Bay’s Offense?

During the 2025 NFL season with the Chargers, Vidal carried the football 155 times for 643 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry.

In addition to his production on the ground, Vidal also caught 16 passes for 136 yards and a score.

At 24 years old, the running back could be a perfect backup behind Josh Jacobs. He would be able to replace Wilson and be an upgrade over Chris Brooks, who Green Bay re-signed during the offseason. It’s an option at least worth considering.

Expect to continue hearing rumors about the Packers as the NFL Draft approaches. There is also a chance they could use a mid-round or late-round pick on a new running back. Only time will tell, but Gutekunst has needs to address and the running back position is most certainly one of them.
