The Baltimore Orioles can’t shake the injuries that have been sustained to catchers this season. Adley Rutschman has been placed on the injured list, retroactive to July 19, due to left wrist inflammation. On top of this, Samuel Basallo is dealing with a setback of his own.
Basallo, 21, exited the Orioles’ July 19 win over the Houston Astros while dealing with right shoulder discomfort. Baltimore is down to their third option at catcher, Sam Huff.
However, Baltimore was given positive news on Samuel Basallo’s shoulder ahead of Tuesday’s contest against the Boston Red Sox.
Basallo said that his right shoulder is feeling better. He’s confident he will avoid an injured list stint and will play again soon, Jake Rill of MLB.com reported.
Orioles Battling to Get Back in Postseason Race

Baltimore, which is three games below .500, is looking to get back into the postseason race. They are nine games from first place in the AL East. A Wild Card berth is the more realistic scenario while being three games out.
The Orioles are in the middle of facing the hottest team in baseball, the Boston Red Sox. Boston, which is currently on the longest win streak of the 2026 season, put an end to the Orioles’ seven-game winning streak. Baltimore will look to end this streak on Tuesday and avoid losing the three-game series.
Injuries have been an issue for the Orioles as of late.
Bullpen pitcher Ryan Helsley was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list on July 19. Helsley is dealing with inflammation in his throwing elbow.
“The Orioles are optimistic that the 31-year-old will be activated from the IL before the end of the season, but a clearer target date for his return won’t be known until he starts throwing again,” wrote CBS Sports.
Starting pitcher Chris Bassitt was also transferred to the 60-day injured list. The starter underwent back surgery in June, but will begin a throwing progression this week, Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun announced.
Third baseman Blaze Alexander is also serving a 10-day injured list stint after sustaining a left hand fracture on July 12.
Adley Rutschman Trade Rumors
Despite his name being floated around in trade talks, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman is less likely to get moved before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. (Photo by Alex Slitz/Getty Images)
Although Orioles switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman is battling a pattern of injuries, his name has floated around in trade rumors.
Rutschman, 28, has been sent to the injured list five different times over the last two seasons.
There are talks of the former All-Star catcher getting moved before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. However, he is “less likely” to get moved, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal wrote.
“His injury, combined with the team’s surge, further reduces the already low odds of the Orioles trading him,” Rosenthal added.
When healthy, Rutschman has been a solid bat for the Orioles. Through 67 games this season, he’s hitting .251/.331/.433 with eight home runs and 47 RBI.
