Nonprofit seeks ‘environmental change-makers’ for contest

Climate video contest

Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action (SVYCA) recently launched its Youth Climate Video Contest for aspiring filmmakers ages 12-18 from Santa Clara County to submit short videos highlighting Coyote Valley, farming and food systems, nature-based climate solutions and personal connections to nature.

The contest is sponsored by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority.

“By giving young people a creative platform to share their priorities, they’re helping cultivate the next generation of environmental change-makers,” said Jackie McBride, the authority’s community investment specialist, in a release.

The youth-led nonprofit created the contest as a platform for students to take informed climate action and share their ideas to inspire more initiatives within their own communities.

Video submissions should be 2-5 minutes long. Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges made up of local leaders and climate professionals. Winning entries will be announced April 22 and will receive $100-$500, and the winners will be screened at an event in mid-May.

Submissions close on March 31. For more information and to upload video submissions, visit https://svycanbs-contest.com

Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority has released a new activity book for nature-loving kids ages 3 and older to learn about local open spaces and the great outdoors. “I Love Nature” is a 19-page book illustrated by Oakland author and artist Robert Liu-Trujillo. The free, downloadable activity book is intended as a tool to introduce young readers to local plants, flora and fauna. It is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese.

“When children explore nature, their curiosity blooms, helping them grow into adults who care for these places,” said Mel Sarmento, the authority’s educational program administrator in a release. “This activity book offers a playful path into that wonder.”
