NFL World Reacts to Packers’ Latest Quarterback News

The Green Bay Packers entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a need at quarterback behind franchise signal caller Jordan Love.

During NFL free agency this offseason, the Packers watched Malik Willis leave town to a sign a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. Over the last two years, he has been arguably the top backup quarterback in football.

Losing an elite backup quarterback can be difficult to replace.

While many expected to see Green Bay draft a quarterback, Brian Gutekunst and the front office did not go that route. The Packers had an excellent all-around draft, but they waited until after it had come to a conclusion to make a quarterback move.

Following the draft, Green Bay moved quickly to sign Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones as an undrafted free agent. He will now have a chance to compete for the team’s backup quarterback job with Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord.

NFL World Reacts to Packers Signing Kyron Drones

Drones may not have been a top-tier quarterback prospect in the draft, but there are many who are intrigued to see what he can do with the Packers.

In the comments section of NFL insider Tom Pelissero’s report of Green Bay signing Drones, plenty of fans made their thoughts known about the move.

“DRONE STRIKES IN GREEN BAY BABY,” one fan wrote.

Another comment said, “Packers might have found a real sleeper in Kyron Drones.”

“Unlike Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, and Taylor Elgersma, Drones has a skill set worth developing. He’ll need plenty of work, but he has legit upside,” a third comment read.

A fourth fan commented, “Excited for Drones to get a chance. He has the physical attributes. Going through LaFleurs QB school will help him.”

“Malik Willis 2.0,” a fifth fan said.

Green Bay May Have a Diamond in the Rough With Drones

Whether or not Drones will make the 53-man roster as Love’s backup remains to be seen. However, he has the kind of skill-set that the Packers were looking for this offseason.

What made Willis so dangerous was his ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground. Drones is a dual-threat quarterback with a lot of athleticism as well.

During his college career, with his first season coming at Baylor and his last three at Virginia Tech, Drones threw for 5,784 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions, while completing 58.3 percent of his passes. He took care of the football well, although he never quite lived up to the hype as a passer.

On the ground, he tore up opposing defenses to the tune of 1,847 yards and 22 touchdowns.

At the very least, Drones is a cheap pickup with upside. Landing with an elite quarterback coach like Matt LaFleur will do him a lot of good. He has a legitimate chance to make the roster with a strong training camp and preseason.
