New York Mets Predicted to Swing Big Trade for $75M Star Pitcher

The New York Mets are entering the 2026 season as one of the league’s most fascinating teams. After disappointing mightily during the 2025 campaign and missing the playoffs, the Mets will be aiming to turn things around in a major way this season.

The Mets responded to their rough 2025 season by having a very busy offseason. The Mets added several new players to their roster, with star infielder Bo Bichette and star pitcher Freddy Peralta being the most notable. They also brought in Luis Robert Jr, Marcus Semien, Devin Williams, Jorge Polanco, and Luke Weaver. With this, there is no question that the Mets are heading into the season with high expectations and will be looking to do some damage.

Yet, when looking at the Mets’ current roster, it is absolutely clear that they still could use another star pitcher in their starting rotation. Because of this, they are now being predicted to acquire a star pitcher from the Texas Rangers.

New York Mets Predicted to Make Trade for Rangers Star Pitcher Nathan Eovaldi

In a recent article for The Athletic, Jim Bowden made 26 predictions for the 2026 season. One of the big predictions that Bowden made was that the Mets would swing a trade with the Rangers to land star pitcher Nathan Eovaldi at this year’s trade deadline.

“With a year and a half remaining on his contract, starter Nathan Eovaldi is traded by the Rangers to the Mets at the deadline,” Bowden wrote.

With the Mets in need of another high-impact starter, it would make sense if they swung a deal for Eovaldi this season. He would give their starting rotation a major boost and could work very well in the middle of it.

When looking at the season Eovaldi just had for the Rangers in 2025, there is no question that he would have the potential to be an excellent addition to the Mets’ roster. In 22 appearances last season with the Rangers, the 6-foot-2 righty had an 11-3 record, a 1.73 ERA, and 129 strikeouts. With numbers like these, he would certainly be a good pitcher for the Mets to bring in as they look to be true contenders this campaign.

Eovaldi would also be more than a rental for the Mets if acquired, which adds to his appeal. This is because he is entering the second season of his three-year, $75 million contract. Thus, he would be under contract for the Mets until the end of the 2027 season.

Mets Will Have Competition to Land Eovaldi This Season

If the Mets try to swing a deal with the Rangers for Eovaldi, there is no question that they would have plenty of competition. With Eovaldi being a star pitcher who has multiple years left on his deal, several contenders would love to have him on their roster. This is especially so when noting that he is a two-time All-Star and a two-time World Series champion.

Yet, with the Mets being in a prime position to land another pitcher, Eovaldi is a player who they should strongly consider pursuing this campaign.
