New York Mets Claim Intriguing Infielder Off Waivers From Twins

The New York Mets are having a terrible start to the 2026 season. At the time of this writing, the Mets currently sport a 9-19 record and are fourth in the National League East. They have also lost each of their last three games, so things are only getting worse for the Mets as the season rolls on.

The Mets also notably went on a 12-game losing streak from April 8 to April 21, so they have been disappointing big time. This is especially so when noting that they spent a lot of money during the offseason in hopes of bouncing back in 2026. However, so far, they have been continuing to head in the wrong direction.

Given how this season has gone for the Mets so far, they should be looking to add to their roster in hopes of getting things back on track. Due to this, they have now added a new infielder to their roster through a waiver claim.

New York Mets Claim Infielder Eric Wagaman Off Waivers From Minnesota Twins

The Mets announced on Monday afternoon that they have claimed infielder Eric Wagaman off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. In addition, the Mets shared that Wagaman will kick off his tenure with the organization with Triple-A Syracuse.

Wagaman was designated for assignment by the Twins last week. This is after he had one home run, six RBIs, and a .159 batting average in 18 games with Triple-A St. Paul this season. Now, with this move, he will be heading to the Mets organization.

While Wagaman has struggled in the minors this season, he has shown that he can be a decent depth player at the major league level. In 140 games this past season with the Miami Marlins, he had nine home runs, 28 doubles, 53 RBIs, 119 hits, and a .250 batting average. This is after he had two home runs, 10 RBIs, 18 hits, and a .250 batting average in 18 games for the Los Angeles Angels during his rookie year in 2024.

With this, Wagaman will now provide the Mets with a solid depth player who already has some major league experience. This is not a bad thing for the struggling Mets, and this is especially so when noting that Wagaman can play multiple positions. This includes left field and third base.

There is ultimately no harm in the Mets taking a chance on Wagaman with this waiver claim. The 6-foot-4 infielder will now be looking to impress with Triple-A Syracuse from here.

Mets Should Not Be Done Making Moves Yet

Given how badly this season has gone for the Mets so far, there is no question that they should continue to make additions to their roster. They have multiple areas on their roster that they could look to improve, so they are a team to keep an eye on during the beginning stages of this season.

Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to see if Wagaman can end up being a decent pickup for the Mets from here.
