New Orleans Saints legend and future hall of famer Cameron Jordan sounds off on the team’s recent acquisitions at edge rusher. Jordan currently remains unsigned. The team has been non-committal about his return to New Orleans. The lack of communication frustrates Jordan.
He said, “I don’t know. There’s nobody [the Saints acquired] who produced the way I did last year, so. My talent speaks for itself. And if things work out, phenomenal. I’ve always said I understand the business side to it, so I’ve never worried about it.”
On Saturday, the Saints traded their fifth round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for Tyree Wilson, former seventh overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. Subsequently, the Saints also signed former New England Patriots linebacker Anfernee Jennings to a contract on Sunday. He was previously a starter for the Patriots.
Last season, Jordan produced 10.5 sacks while Wilson and Jennings both only had 4 sacks.
Cameron Jordan is a Saints Legend
GettyCameron Jordan projects to be a hall of famer with how his career has gone.
If the Saints do not retain Jordan, it would be a very strange development for the organization. Jordan is one of the best edge rushers the NFL has ever seen. He has 137.5 total sacks in his career, which ranks among the top 15 of all edge rushers. Jordan only has made First Team All-Pro once in his career, but he has been selected to the Pro Bowl eight times.
The Saints drafted Jordan with the 24th overall pick in 2011. He has remained with the organization ever since, becoming a leader and symbolic of the black and gold. Even Jordan himself has trouble seeing himself in another uniform when discussing the Saints.
He said, “You know, we just made a move,” Jordan said before correcting himself. “They just made a move (for Jennings). I said ‘we.’ I keep saying ‘we,’ and I’m having to force myself to say black and gold, black and gold, even though it’s always going to be a ‘we.’ So yeah, I think that again, they made plenty of great moves, and honestly, I hope things do align. And if not, I’ll know what the landscape looks like for me in the next week.”
Saints Edge Rushing Situation as of Today
GettyEven without Jordan, the New Orleans Saints pass rush picture is starting to become clear.
After the signings of Wilson and Jennings, the Saints seem to have a solid rotation of pass rushers regardless if they resign Jordan. Chase Young is still incredibly relevant to this defense as well as Carl Granderson. However, Young really is the only name among them who has major upside. Granderson, Wilson, and Jennings have showed they can be rotational factors. Yet, it is unlikely that any of them will match what Cameron Jordan has done with the Saints.
It would be disappointing to see Jordan in another team’s jersey as he represents so much of the Black and Gold culture. Especially for a team that is young and developing, keeping an all time great like Jordan could pay dividends.
