“We’ve long believed a collaboration between Graeter’s and Churchill Downs was a natural fit,” Richard Graeter, fourth-generation president and CEO of Graeter’s Ice Cream, said. “When the Churchill Downs team visited Cincinnati late last year, they experienced our factory tour and tasted ice cream straight from our French Pots. And we introduced them to what is now Backstretch Bourbon Cherry.”

Bringing the Derby Home: Special Ice Cream Collections

For those who won’t be attending the Derby in person, Graeter’s has made it easy to recreate the celebration at home. Their “Off to the Races” collection features curated bundles that bring together a mix of classic flavors and Derby-inspired treats, perfect for watch parties or festive gatherings.

One standout option is the Backstretch Six-Pint Pack, which highlights the new flavor with two pints alongside fan favorites like Madagascar Vanilla, Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Salted Caramel. Another premium offering, the Winner’s Circle Six-Pint Pack, includes a special addition from Kern’s Kitchen – the famous Derby Pie, long associated with the festival surrounding the race. Where to Find It

Fans won’t have to travel to Louisville to get their hands on this limited-edition treat – though that might be the most immersive way to enjoy it. Backstretch Bourbon Cherry became available starting April 13 through Graeter’s website for nationwide shipping, as well as in scoop shops across its operating regions. On April 15, it will begin appearing in select grocery stores, making the ice cream even more accessible to curious dessert lovers.

Of course, the real excitement will unfold at the Derby itself. During both the Kentucky Oaks and Derby events, Graeter’s will make its on-site debut with a dedicated ice cream truck stationed near the Clubhouse Gate. Attendees can sample the new flavor alongside beloved classics like Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. Select premium areas within Churchill Downs will also feature scoops of the new creation.
