New Kentucky Derby Treat Set to Debut During Race Weekend

Each spring, the Kentucky Derby brings together fast horses, extravagant hats, and time-honored Southern traditions. This year, however, there’s a new indulgence galloping into the spotlight – an officially licensed ice cream flavor designed to capture the spirit of Derby season. It’s not just a dessert; it’s a sensory extension of the race itself, blending flavor, heritage, and a touch of Kentucky flair.

At the center of this delicious debut is Graeter’s Ice Cream, a historic, family-run company known for its small-batch craftsmanship. Partnering with Churchill Downs, the iconic home of the Derby, Graeter’s has introduced a limited-edition flavor that aims to embody the excitement and elegance of race day.

The Flavor Behind the Hype

The new creation, Backstretch Bourbon Cherry, is a rich and layered experience. It combines the deep sweetness of black cherries with the nutty crunch of pralines, all infused with a subtle bourbon essence. The result is a flavor profile that feels both indulgent and distinctly Kentucky-inspired.

Visually, the ice cream makes an impression as well. Its soft pink hue nods to the festive, fashion-forward atmosphere of Derby day, while its packaging pays tribute to the track’s recognizable twin spires and racing imagery. Everything about it has been thoughtfully designed to evoke the thrill, pageantry, and charm that define the Derby experience.

From Concept to Derby Approval

The journey from idea to official Derby treat was surprisingly swift. Graeter’s developed both the flavor and its evocative name internally, aiming to capture the energy of the “backstretch” – the part of the track where strategy and anticipation build before the final push to the finish line. When representatives from Churchill Downs sampled the creation, the reaction was immediate and enthusiastic.

“We’ve long believed a collaboration between Graeter’s and Churchill Downs was a natural fit,” Richard Graeter, fourth-generation president and CEO of Graeter’s Ice Cream, said. “When the Churchill Downs team visited Cincinnati late last year, they experienced our factory tour and tasted ice cream straight from our French Pots. And we introduced them to what is now Backstretch Bourbon Cherry.”

Bringing the Derby Home: Special Ice Cream Collections

For those who won’t be attending the Derby in person, Graeter’s has made it easy to recreate the celebration at home. Their “Off to the Races” collection features curated bundles that bring together a mix of classic flavors and Derby-inspired treats, perfect for watch parties or festive gatherings.

One standout option is the Backstretch Six-Pint Pack, which highlights the new flavor with two pints alongside fan favorites like Madagascar Vanilla, Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Salted Caramel. It’s a balanced assortment that offers both novelty and nostalgia in every scoop.

Another premium offering, the Winner’s Circle Six-Pint Pack, includes a special addition from Kern’s Kitchen – the famous Derby Pie, long associated with the festival surrounding the race. Paired with flavors like Bourbon Ball and other Graeter’s staples, this bundle leans into the full culinary tradition of Derby season, combining dessert icons into one indulgent package.

For something a bit more playful, the Trifecta Chip Wheelies Pack delivers Graeter’s signature ice cream sandwiches in a trio of flavors. Featuring Backstretch Bourbon Cherry tucked between sugar cookies, along with classic combinations using chocolate chip cookies, this option adds a fun, shareable twist to the lineup.

Where to Find It

Fans won’t have to travel to Louisville to get their hands on this limited-edition treat – though that might be the most immersive way to enjoy it. Backstretch Bourbon Cherry became available starting April 13 through Graeter’s website for nationwide shipping, as well as in scoop shops across its operating regions. On April 15, it will begin appearing in select grocery stores, making the ice cream even more accessible to curious dessert lovers.

Of course, the real excitement will unfold at the Derby itself. During both the Kentucky Oaks and Derby events, Graeter’s will make its on-site debut with a dedicated ice cream truck stationed near the Clubhouse Gate. Attendees can sample the new flavor alongside beloved classics like Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. Select premium areas within Churchill Downs will also feature scoops of the new creation.
