Talladega Superspeedway has revealed its race weekend dates for the 2027 NASCAR season. NASCAR will head to the 2.66-mile Alabama track April 24-25 for the first weekend and Oct. 29-31 for the second weekend.
The spring Talladega race remains in the same spot as the 2025 season, while the fall weekend moves back a week from this year’s 3-day weekend of Oct. 23-25. Talladega’s move to the final weekend of October next year came as a surprise to a NASCAR insider.
Bob Pockrass on NASCAR Talladega weekend
The dates for next year’s Talladega race were released on Thursday, August 6. Bob Pockrass, a NASCAR insider for FOX Sports, was caught off guard by the track’s move to the end of October.
That is because next year’s fall Talladega Cup Series race falls on Halloween. While that is not unfamiliar to the superspeedway, Pockrass was surprised based on history.
When Talladega was on Halloween weekend a few years prior, Pockrass noted attendance was down compared to other years. Pockrass believes that is because parents who often attend the fall race opted to spend the holiday with their children.
“I am a little surprised Talladega is October 31. When Talladega did Halloween several years ago, attendance was down and one of the reasons I was told is that many adult attendees treat Talladega weekend as one away from the kids and they instead chose Halloween with the kids,” Pockrass wrote.
The Cup Series raced at Talladega on Halloween weekend in 2009 and 2010. The 2009 fall race took place on Nov. 1, which was won by Jamie McMurray. In 2010, the race took place on Halloween (Oct. 31), a race won by Clint Bowyer.
Since then, the fall Talladega weekend has bounced around from the first weekend of October to the middle of the month. The earliest the race weekend has been hosted was the weekend of October 1, with the latest being the weekend of October 25.
Talladega set to be critical NASCAR Chase race
This year’s Talladega Cup Series race will come at a crucial time in The Chase. The Yellawood 500, scheduled for Sunday, October 25, will be the third-to-last race of the 2026 campaign and the eighth race of the 10-race Chase.
Talladega’s October weekend will feature all three of NASCAR’s top touring series. The Craftsman Truck Series race, titled the Love’s RV Stop 225, will take place Friday, October 23, and is scheduled for 85 laps.
On Saturday, October 24, Talladega will host the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race, titled The Progress Group 250, set for 94 laps of action.
The Yellawood 500 is scheduled for 188 laps. Chase Briscoe enters as the defending winner of the event, which earned him a spot in last year’s Championship 4 race.
Following Talladega, the Cup Series circuit will head to Martinsville Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway, respectively, for the final two races of The Chase.
Because of all the chaos of drafting track racing and the threat of “The Big One,” Talladega has proven to always be a wild card race in the 10-race postseason.
With the return of The Chase format, it will be interesting to see how “Dega” shakes the championship battle up.
