Mother, son dead in Joliet double homicide

A woman and her 4-year-old son were found dead Sunday in an apparent double homicide in suburban Joliet, police said.

Joliet police responded about 7 a.m. to multiple 911 calls and found the 36-year-old mother and the boy unresponsive with apparent gunshot wounds in the backyard of the home in the 700 block of Garnsey Avenue.

Officers also found a man, 29, shirtless with an apparent gunshot wound to the ankle, which police believe was self-inflicted.

Inside the home, police found an 8-year-old boy with special needs unharmed in a bedroom. He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center as a precaution. The woman is believed to be the mother of both children, according to Joliet police.

Police recovered a gun and several shell casings matching the gun at the scene.

The man was hospitalized under police custody with a non-life-threatening injury.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Joliet Police Department at (815) 724-3020.
