The Boston Red Sox turned to Cy Young contender Garrett Crochet on Monday against the Minnesota Twins.
Crochet is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, but against the Twins, he was shelled as he struggled from the get-go. The left-hander ended up going just 1.2 innings, allowing 11 runs, 10 earned on 9 hits while walking 3, as he also gave up 2 home runs. It was a terrible outing from Crochet, who’s now 2-2 with a 7.58 ERA on the year.
Following the outing, the MLB world reacted to the start, and many felt like Crochet was either injured or tipping pitches.
“is crochet hurt or just tipping i’m so confused,” one fan wrote.
“Garrett Crochet will be getting Tommy John in a few weeks Disgusting what his manager did today to not save him,” another fan added.
“Protect your peace (I think Crochet might be tipping),” another fan added.
Crochet’s velocity was down throughout the start, and fans believe that could be a cause for concern.
“Now was he tipping or hurt? Cause something is really off..,” a fan wrote.
“He gotta be hurt or something it’s no way he just this bad or last season was a fluke,” another added.
“Worst I’ve ever seen him play, wow,” a fan wrote.
Crochet set his career-high in earned runs allowed, and tied his career-high in hits allowed in his start against the Twins.
“We’ve never seen Crochet that powerless. Tipping? Who knows. But velo was down and he had command of nothing. Hope he’s ok physically. Gonna take a year to recover the ERA,” a fan added.
“I’m concerned about Garrett Crochet’s health. Actually. That was bizarre,” a fan wrote.
The Red Sox ended up losing 13-6.
Crochet Reacts to Disastrous Outing
Crochet is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, but he struggled mightily against the Twins on Monday.
Following the outing, Crochet was asked about what went wrong, and he admitted he wasn’t sure, but felt like his command wasn’t there.
“I mean, it’s tough to say,” Crochet said postgame. “Command as a whole has been spotty. I’ve gotten away with it a little this early in the year, but tonight, they made me pay. It was weak contact, hard contact, walks, hit by pitch. A little bit of everything.”
It’s the worst start of Crochet’s career, and Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey said he didn’t expect it, but it’s something the team and Crochet have to move on from quickly.
Yeah, it’s a little eye-opening, obviously. I think there’s a little frustration and curiosity,” Bailey said. “It happened really quickly, so we’ve just got to move past it.”
Red Sox Manager Reacts to Crochet Outing
Crochet has been the Red Sox’s ace and someone the team turns to to get the team back on track.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Crochet’s stuff wasn’t there, which played a key role in the Twins hitting him hard. And, the fact that the Twins had been going up against so many lefties as of late played a role.
“The stuff was down,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “That’s the reality of it. But they’ve been doing that to a lot of lefties lately. Like I said before the game, (Tarik) Skubal and Framber (Valdez), plus two lefties in Toronto, and now Garrett.”
Crochet’s next start is set for Sunday against the Detroit Tigers.
