MLB Insider Pours Cold Water on New York Yankees-Anthony Volpe Situation

One of the biggest storylines surrounding the New York Yankees right now is the Anthony Volpe situation. Volpe is currently in the minors finishing up a rehab assignment, but Aaron Boone is still undecided on what Volpe’s role with the Yankees is.

The Yankees have the best record in the American League right now, and their current shortstop, Jose Caballero, is playing very well, which brings up the difficult situation regarding Volpe.

Recently, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal shared his thoughts on the situation and if it makes sense to keep Anthony Volpe in the minors.

Via an appearance on Fox Sports, doing his normal MLB reporting duties, Ken Rosenthal shared his thoughts on why the Yankees could keep Anthony Volpe in the minors:

“Volpe’s rehabilitation assignment expires tomorrow, so at that point the Yankees either bring him to the majors or they keep him in the minors.”

“So, if you’re the Yankees, why disrupt a good thing? Keep Anthony Volpe in the minors, and say hey, we want you to get a full spring training coming off that shoulder surgery, and if Caballero slows down, then you have a decision to make.”

As Rosenthal noted, the Yankees will have to make at least somewhat of a decision before the weekend’s end, but given that Volpe has options in his contract, it’s a real possibility that New York decides to keep him in the minors for the time being.

In 11 games across different minor-league affiliates, Volpe is hitting .278 with 1 home run, no doubles, and an OPS of .686. Those stats indicate that he may need more time before joining the big-league club.

What Should the Yankees Do with Anthony Volpe?

What should the Yankees do with Anthony Volpe? Aaron Boone has been very non-committal about this whole process, basically side-stepping every question that he’s asked about the situation, but the decision is imminent.

There are a few different ways the Yankees could go about this. First, they could just option Volpe and keep him in the minors for now. Another option is bringing him up and only playing him on select days or against certain pitchers. Trading Volpe is also always an option, as his name has steadily been linked to trade rumors, which likely won’t go away.

Volpe is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. In 2025, he hit .212 with 19 HR, 72 RBI, and 150 strikeouts. His defense also isn’t great, which can hurt the Yankees in a variety of ways. Again, the Yankees aren’t exactly missing Volpe’s presence, which leads to all the speculation surrounding his name.
