Sue Phillips has added another prestigious award to her trophy case.
The Archbishop Mitty coach, who has led the Monarchs to their fourth Open Division state title appearance in seven years, was named the Naismith Girls High School Coach of the Year on Thursday.
It is the second time Phillips has won the award, previously getting the honor in 2018. She is the first coach to be named Naismith Girls Coach of the Year multiple times since the award debuted in 2008.
This is a shared honor. I stand proudly on the shoulders of my current and former players and coaching staff,” Phillips said in a press release. “Much appreciation to the Archbishop Mitty community for their continued support.”
Kevin Boyle from Florida-based school Montverde Academy was named the boys coach of the year.
Phillips, who is in her 31st season coaching Mitty, has amassed over 800 victories in her career and coached WNBA players Haley Jones and Danielle Robinson. This year’s Mitty team includes UConn commit Morgan Cheli and ESPN top-five 2026 recruit McKenna Woliczko.
Phillips will be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as a part of the 2024 class and was named head coach for the U.S. team at the 2024 Women’s Nike Hoop Summit.

Mitty is a perfect 30-0 this season and is the No. 1 team in the country, according to Maxpreps and ESPN. The Monarchs recently won the NorCal Open Division regional championship, beating Clovis West 71-34 for their 16th NorCal title.
Mitty will play SoCal powerhouse Etiwanda in the Open state final on Saturday in a rematch of last year’s state title game. Phillips will be looking for her seventh state championship.
