After this past season, Michael Porter Jr. and the Brooklyn Nets will have an even tougher time staking any claims to New York’s massive local fanbase, thanks to the Knicks winning the championship.
Porter got a humbling reminder of the disparity during a recent night out.
The moment was so striking that it almost overshadowed who the Nets star was hanging out with at the time.

In a clip shared on Instagram, Porter can be seen trying to enter a venue. The Nets star was stymied at the door, though. The situation was already notable enough, with paparazzi around to capture the 6-foot-10 Porter’s experience in real-time.
To make matters worse, though, Knicks star point guard and NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson was able to walk right in.
“Net: You on the list?” New York Basketball posted on X on July 26. “Knick: Go right in.”
“This is wild to see in real life,” said Flagrant 2 Podcast host Kazeem Famuyide in post on X on July 26, reacting to the clip.
The interaction caused a stir on social media. It also fueled a never-ending discussion that has lingered over the Nets since the organization relocated from New Jersey following conclusion of the 2011-12 season.
That is whether the Nets can ever step out of the Knicks’ shadow in New York.
They already faced what may fans suggest were insurmountable odds. That was before the Knicks recaptured the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Michael Porter Jr. Draws More Attention With Peyton Watson

Things have been all quiet as far as the Nets are concerned. But Porter continues to be spotted with friend, former Denver Nuggets teammate, and restricted free agent Peyton Watson. Watson was with Porter at the venue.
Their summer excursions have garnered attention.
“The two have now been seen partying on a yacht off French Riviera and clubs in New York. at Fanatics FanFest, World Cup Final and Nets training facility, all in last month,” Nets Daily posted on X on July 26.
Watson’s situation is complicated by two key factors: other teams’ interest and the Nuggets’ ability to match any offer sheet that he signs.
A sign and trade remains the most logical answer.
The Nets’ lack of apparent interest in Watson could be telling. It is also fair to question whether a team in their position should be willing to part with assets for a player who does not exponentially raise their ceiling. That is true be it draft capital or players.
It would be a sign of goodwill with Porter. He is in the final year of his contract and has expressed an interest in staying with the Nets. Still, that is a significant investment.
That does not even count the contract that it would take to secure Watson’s signature.
Nets Get Pessimistic Outlook
There is not much faith in a Julius Randle-led Nets team.
There remains questions about what the Nets should do with Porter. He, along with offsason trade acquisition Julius Randle, is poised to lead a mixed group. It is comprised of veterans and young prospects.
There is not a lot of optimism about the current combination, though, despite Porter and Randle’s optimism.
ESPN’s Ben Golliver believes the Nets are “still buying time.”
“If the Nets’ ongoing youth movement was unlikely to deliver a lottery pick next June, why not dangle some of their future draft assets in trades that could help them be more competitive after a dismal 20-win campaign?” Golliver wrote on July 23, adding that “Randle . . . isn’t talented enough to carry a contender or young enough to shepherd the Nets’ next era. Randle should help Brooklyn make progress in the standings, but plugging him in as a stopgap doesn’t qualify as a long-term plan.
“Nets general manager Sean Marks has preached the importance of strategic “flexibility,” and for now that means waiting on the development of lottery picks Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr. Demin’s strong showing at summer league hinted that the Russian guard could be headed for a second-year breakout that would bring much-needed clarity to the wayward Nets.”
