Michael Jordan Privately Defended LeBron Against Media Critics

Michael Jordan went out of his way to defend LeBron James earlier in his career when the sports media started to turn against him. ESPN’s Michael Wilbon shared a wild story about talking to Jordan in the late 2000s to early 2010s timeline of James’ career. LeBron was started to get called out for not winning an NBA Championship as fast as Jordan.

Wilbon revealed the following details on First Take from his old conversations with Jordan:

“I remember having a conversation with Michael, who said, ‘Hey, take it easy. When you talk about this tomorrow, take it easy on this kid, and here’s why.’ Michael had a list of reasons, things he really liked about LeBron James. He didn’t have to do that, but he understood what was going to happen publicly because he had been on the other end of that early in his career.

When folks said the scoring champion (Jordan) could never win, couldn’t beat Detroit. He lost to the Detroit Pistons three times in a row in the playoffs. So, Michael understood that. He wanted to soften that blow for LeBron James, who was coming up later.  So, if people think Jordan has somehow resented LeBron, they’re wrong. We’ve had these conversations where he said, ‘Don’t let the narrative be this on this kid.’”

Jordan told Wilbon that he was being harsh to LeBron with criticism for losing in his first Cleveland Cavaliers tenure. James was getting criticized for failing to live up to the hype with a lackluster supporting cast.

How Michael Jordan Related To LeBron James

Wilbon revealed that Jordan understood James’ dilemma of having to get over the hump to win his first NBA Championship. Jordan ran into the issue of the “Bad Boys” era Detroit Pistons eliminating his Chicago Bulls three consecutive seasons.

James had a couple of rough eliminations after he made his first NBA Finals in 2007. The Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic eliminating LeBron in seasons where he had immense pressure convinced him to join the Miami Heat to form the big three.

Why Michael Jordan Never Publicly Defended LeBron

Jordan making these points in private adds an interesting question of wondering why he never publicly did it. However, fans of Jordan will easily realize that he just likes to keep himself out of the public eye

Before this season’s NBC presence, Jordan has shied away from expressing any opinions or analysis on the current basketball product. Names like LeBron, Stephen Curry, and Luka Doncic have received general praise at various points for being great superstars.

Jordan still refuses to make himself an easily accessible public figure and focuses on enjoying his private life. Only media members to build a connection and former players to keep a friendship with Jordan will get to hear his unfiltered thoughts on the NBA.
