Mets Trade Idea Offloads Ronny Mauricio to AL Contender for 3.66 ERA Southpaw Reliever

The New York Mets have been one of the most trade-happy teams in Major League Baseball, and it’s possible, with such a crowded infield, that they are not done making moves.

When the Mets signed Bo Bichette, that sort of pushed infielders like Ronny Mauricio, Brett Baty, and Mark Vientos out of the fold, but for New York, their services could be accepted with another team, and that would allow the Mets to upgrade in other areas, like the bullpen. A recent trade idea features the Mets offloading utilityman Ronny Mauricio to the Detroit Tigers.

Should the Mets Consider this Trade Idea?

Ronny Mauricio doesn’t really have a spot on this current Mets roster, unless a starting member of this Mets infield (Bo Bichette, Lindor, Marcus Semien) gets hurt. And even if, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos might slot in ahead of Mauricio on the pecking order for playing time.

A recent MLB mock trade idea by Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Shea has the Mets making a trade with the Detroit Tigers for southpaw reliever Tyler Holton in exchange for Ronny Mauricio:

“With the Tigers, he [Mauricio] can play consistently at 2B or 3B, giving him the chance to convert that raw talent into counting stats. Fantasy owners can expect Mauricio to produce roughly 15–20 home runs, 10–15 stolen bases, and solid run and RBI totals if he remains healthy and plays every day.”

Tyler Holton would be a good addition to the Mets’ bullpen, which lacks a leverage left-hander. The two prominent lefty options in New York’s bullpen are Brooks Raley and AJ Minter. Minter missed much of 2025 with injury, and Raley is a soft lefty.

Holton posted a 3.66 ERA over 78.2 innings and six starts, which were likely as an “opener”. In 2024, Holton really proved he can be one of the better southpaw relievers by boasting a 2.19 ERA over 94.1 innings. He holds a lot of value, so a player-swap deal might not be enough for the Mets to acquire him, as Detroit might also ask for a prospect or two to round out the deal.

Should the Mets Move On from Ronny Mauricio?

Mauricio has just 269 MLB at-bats on his resume, which isn’t exactly enough to fully judge a player, but he’s kind of in a really sticky spot with the way the Mets roster is constructed.

In those 269 ABs, he’s hit .234 with eight home runs, 19 RBI, and an OPS+ of 84.

Again, not a good enough sample size to judge, but he’s still very young (24), and maybe a team like the Tigers would give him more runway to see everyday playing time, and then he can really develop as a hitter.

If not the Tigers, the Mets could still look to ship Ronny Mauricio to another MLB organization, like the Angels, Marlins or Nationals, who are in search of young players they can develop in their system.
