Mauricio hasn’t seen much MLB time as a young infielder, and Christian Scott has not pitched in MLB since 2024.

Should the Mets Trade for Nick Pivetta?

Nick Pivetta is a 33-year-old starter who is tied to a four-year, $55 million contract. Early reports indicate he may opt out of his current deal after the season’s end, but that may be in jeopardy if he’s injured.
In 2025, Pivetta made 31 starts for the Padres and posted a stellar 2.87 ERA over 181.2 innings. This season, Pivetta has made four starts and given up eight earned runs with 24 strikeouts.
It might be a good move for the Mets to offload Ronny Mauricio for another arm to their pitching staff. Mauricio was recently DFA’d again after the recent Tommy Pham news, which makes his path back up to the majors even tougher.
This is also a really good trade package for the Mets to give up in a potential deal. Two players who don’t have much of a role with the Mets for a starter in Pivetta, who has been durable over the past several seasons.

Sorry to all the Mets fans who may be tired of these *semi-baseless* rumors, but due to New York’s uber-aggressive MLB offseason, rumors and speculation will continue to persist throughout the season.
But do the Mets need to make a panic move after their slow start?
No, but New York could use additional help in the pitching staff.
Shea explains why Pivetta could be a good fit in New York:
“The Mets make this trade because they are in win-now mode and need to maximize their rotation stability for a playoff push. Adding Nick Pivetta gives them a proven strikeout arm who can step into the middle of the rotation immediately. Even with some volatility, his ability to miss bats and handle a starterâs workload helps shorten games and gives the Mets a stronger chance in both the regular season and October-style matchups.”
