Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza’s Job Security Questioned Amid Losing Streak

The New York Mets continue to lose games. As a result, the seat that manager Carlos Mendoza continues to hold is heating up. With a 7-10 record and little existing hope, all eyes turn to the manager. Sports Illustrated’s Thomas Kelson poses the question regarding any potential managerial changes.

“This is Carlos Mendoza’s third season leading the Mets. His first was a major success in 2024, as he led New York back to the playoffs in what was a remarkable turnaround. Last season was the exact opposite, as the Mets went from the best record in baseball in June to missing the playoffs.”

In essence, Mendoza sat at the helm of the Mets when they made a deep playoff run after a turnaround in 2024. Then, with a 5.5-game lead, the team falls apart in the second half, watching their playoff aspirations dissipate.

The Price of Rebuilding, Not Paying Dividends

Mets general manager David Stearns cobbled together a lineup, shipping Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, and Brandon Nimmo. In return, the team brings on Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco.

“After the Mets tore down their roster last season to address a streaky offense, the same issues have resurfaced, leaving fans exasperated. For a team with the second-highest payroll in baseball, their inability to generate consistent offense is beyond puzzling.  To put it into further context, the Mets have scored just nine runs over their last six games. The Minnesota Twins, by comparison, have scored 43 during that same stretch.”

Bichette is currently batting .225 with an on-base percentage of .273 with just two extra-base hits. Siemien presents a slash line of .176/.254/.279. Polanco boasts a -0.2 WAR, which means that he barely affects the lineup. The Mets have not scored a run since Saturday, a streak of 20 scoreless innings.

Expectations Could Seal Mendoza’s Fate

Owner Steve Cohen wants to win, telling anyone within earshot that he wants the Mets to raise a championship. Cohen, with great candor, makes the case that he’s provided ample resources for the team, and they continue to underachieve. Furthermore, the Mets play in a city with a fanbase that demands winning. The words “patience” and “rebuilding” do not exist. The pressure sits with Cohen, then runs downhill to Stearns, eventually landing on Mendoza.

In the article, Mendoza discussed a “lack of quality at-bats.” Yet that falls within his purview: preparing the team to play to the best of their ability. Furthermore, the Mets skipper offered the “find a way” trope, which could signal that desperation is setting in. While losing six in a row is not ideal, the season can turn around.

In the offseason, the team hired Jeff Albert as the director of hitting and Troy Snitker as the hitting coach. Under those circumstances, Mendoza endorsed the hires and signed off.

Subsequently, if New York continues to lose, something will give. Will the team fire Mendoza? That remains to be seen. Yet, with an owner who spends and a fanbase already frustrated, Mendoza needs to make winning a habit. Can they make inroads and start the process to climb out of the basement?
