Mets Linked with Blockbuster Trade After Missing Out on Tucker

The New York Mets will have to move quickly after missing out on Kyle Tucker. The undisputed top hitter in free agency annoyed many baseball fans by agreeing to join the Los Angeles Dodgers on January 15. While Tucker would have filled a huge hole in New York’s outfield, they could soon turn their attention to another position.

Outfield and starting pitching are the two biggest needs for the Mets at the moment. Juan Soto remains the only current outfielder to be guaranteed a starting spot on opening day. Now that Tucker is off the board, Cody Bellinger remains a priority for the Mets. Nevertheless, Ken Rosenthal believes that the New York Yankees will ultimately land the star. The Mets are not expected have the highest offer for Bellinger.

As a result, the Mets could soon turn their attention to a marquee starting pitcher. According to SNY, New York is looking to trade for Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta. The outlet recently claimed that the Mets, as well as the Yankees, checked in with Milwaukee regarding the situation.

SNY believes that the lack of big bats in free agency now essentially forces the Mets to address their lackluster rotation. If they can land Peralta, New York would then go after a mid-level free agent outfielder. They could even target yet another trade. Mets GM David Stearns must acquire a star player this offseason, whether that be a pitcher or an outfielder.

New York Mets Have the Right Pieces to Land Freddy Peralta

GettyFreddy Peralta led the league with 17 wins with the Brewers in 2025.

The Brewers are open to trading Peralta because he is in the final year of his contract with the club. Milwaukee is also not willing to reward the star with a massive long-term deal. As a result, they want to receive a substantial package for Peralta, rather than see him walk away for nothing after 2026.

While the Yankees appear to have an edge over the Mets regarding Bellinger, the Mets likely have an upper hand on the Peralta sweepstakes. As SNY points out, the Mets have the pieces to entice the Brewers to let go of their ace. The Queens team was recently ranked as the seventh-best prospect pool in Major League Baseball. The Bronx club, on the other hand, does not have much depth in the minors. In fact, the Yankees’ farm system is ranked 22nd overall.

SNY suggests that the Mets could center a Peralta deal around Brandon Sproat and A.J. Ewing. The phenoms were respectively ranked as New York’s fifth and seventh prospects in 2025. Sproat, a pitcher, spent most of 2025 in AAA, but did make four appearances for the big league club. Ewing, a versatile infielder/outfielder, split time between all three levels of the Mets’ minors in the year.

Mets Front Office Must Make Bold Offseason Move

This offseason has come with several major heartaches for the Mets and their fans. Losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz in free agency stung quite a bit. Missing out on Tucker only exacerbates the team’s woes at the moment.

Nevertheless, New York can get back on the right track by making a big move via the trade market. Potentially landing Peralta from Milwaukee would certainly help ease tensions between the supporters and ownership.
