Masters Playoff Rules: Format If Golfers Are Tied at Augusta National

Fans are being treated to another close Masters which means the playoff rules could once again be in play. Just in case you do not remember how things played out in 2025, here’s the Masters playoff rules for the 2026 tournament.

If two or more golfers are tied atop the leaderboard after the final round, the Masters playoff rules are quite simple. The golfers tied for the lead will play the 18th hole once again.

If one of the golfers finishes with a better score, they will be awarded the green jacket. Golfers will head to hole No. 10 if there is still a tie.

This alternation of playing holes No. 18 and No. 10 will continue until a leader has emerged at the Masters.

Here’s what you need to know about the Masters playoff rules.

Justin Rose Has Played in 2 Masters Playoffs Heading Into 2026

One person who definitely knows the Masters playoff rules is Justin Rose. The 45-year-old golfer has already been on the losing end of two Masters playoffs.

If you are looking at this reality glass half full, this means that Rose had the best score at Augusta National after four rounds on two occasions. Rose is in the mix to have a third Masters playoff depending on how the final holes play out.

“I think for me I’m very aware that I’ve been close here,” Rose told reporters on April 6. “I’m very aware that I’ve had tough, tough losses here. I also am aware that I enjoy this place. So I don’t want to sort of like — I don’t want to feel that those three second-place finishes need to create a different sort of feeling for me.

“I can’t control the outcome. I think last year in the playoff, I felt like I learned from 2017, and I felt like I played a much better playoff than I did previously. So I kind of adapted and learned. I knew what was coming. I did the right things. I executed. I made two good swings, made a reasonable putt, I thought. So, yeah, I did everything that I could do. So I can kind of live with that in a way.”
