Rory McIlroy’s Philosophy for Masters Round 3: ‘Don’t Protect It… Keep Trying to Make Birdies’

The key to winning a second Masters for McIlroy? The golfer emphasized that he has no plans to protect the lead heading into Saturday.

“Don’t protect it,” McIlroy told reporters on April 10, regarding his philosophy heading into the weekend. “Go out and play freely, keep swinging.

“That was a big part of the lesson from the 2011 Masters to the 2011 U.S. Open was don’t get protective. Go out there and keep playing, keep trying to make birdies, stay as trusting and as committed as possible.”

Can Patrick Reed Chase Down Rory McIlroy at Masters?

One name to watch who has the potential to chase down McIlroy is Reed. The golfer has consistently played well at Augusta National, including winning a green jacket in 2018.

Reed and Burns both sit six strokes behind McIlroy heading into Round 3. The golfer expressed confidence in his Masters chances heading into the weekend.

“Depends how Rory finishes up at the end (McIlroy was completing his second round at the time),” Reed said in an April 10, press conference. “It’s one of those golf courses you go out and you post a low number early, just never know.

“But the thing about this golf course, when it starts playing firm and fast, yeah, you’ll have shorter clubs in some greens, but they get so crusty and bouncy that you have to be so precise on iron shots. Then when you get above the hole you have to putt so defensive,” Reed added.

“Just have to wait and see what the weekend entails. At the same time I love the position I put myself in. Hopefully I can go out and have a good day tomorrow and have a good shot going into Sunday.”
