Mariners Place Brendan Donovan on IL After Hot Start to Season

On Monday, April 10th, the Seattle Mariners officially placed Brendan Donovan on the 10-day injured list. The team is calling it a left groin strain and hopes to have the former Gold Glove winner and All-Star back sooner rather than later.

At first, it seemed like Donovan might have the chance to avoid an IL stint. The Mariners had discussed him being available off the bench, and now, he finds himself unavailable for the next week or so of games.

Donovan, 29, was acquired this past offseason from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for some serious prospect capital. Included in the trade were phenom switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje and long-time Mariners prospect Tai Peete.

After being slotted into an already formidable Seattle lineup, Donovan took off to start the regular season. Leading up to his IL stint, the left-handed Swiss-Army Knife was slashing .304/.437/.518. Good for an OPS+ of 180.

Brendan Donovan Helped Negate Offensive Woes

Donovan provided the Mariners with something they’d been lacking: a true leadoff hitter. With ‘Donnie,’ as fans in St. Louis referred to him, the M’s have a table setter ahead of their big boppers. Without him, other players are pushed into roles they might not be entirely suited for.

J.P. Crawford will be slotting in at the top of the lineup in Donovan’s absence. He has plenty of experience in said role, but the sheer production that was being provided from Donovan’s bat was a spark that Seattle’s lineup desperately needed.

One of his favorite antics was the leadoff bomb, which had become a normality in his short beginnings with the M’s. Donnie was a much-needed presence in the Seattle lineup during their early-season woes.

In the first handful of games in 2026, the Mariners have been about as hot as a penguin in an ice bath. Seattle ranks 28th in batting average, 23rd in OPS, and 24th in hits. Without Donovan’s prowess frontlining their order, things could get even bleaker.

Seventh Ranked Seattle Prospect Promoted

In a corresponding move, Seattle selected the contract of their seventh-ranked prospect, Will Wilson. His 2025 season was rather abysmal, resulting in an OPS+ of 44 and a batting average of .192 with the Cleveland Guardians

Since last year, Wilson has reloaded at AAA Tacoma and sports an OPS of .783 on the young 2026 season. Many fans were slightly disappointed when they learned Wilson was the call-up rather than shortstop Colt Emerson, who has emerged as one of the best prospects in the sport.

Colt Emerson is on his Way

Emerson signed a deal that extends through 2033 with a team option for 2034 before ever setting foot in T-Mobile Park. This kind of contract has been a trend in 2026, as other youngsters such as Cooper Pratt (Brewers) and Konnor Griffin (Pirates) both signed similar deals before their debuts. There’s no doubt the Emerson debut is on the horizon.

Seattle will need to tread water until their bonified leadoff hitter returns. His presence in their lineup completely restructures how the Mariners approach games. With a reliable option at the top, the rest of the pieces fall into place. Brendan Donovan ties this lineup together, like a bow on top.
