Maple Leafs Should Pursue This Top KHL Free Agent

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a bit of a pickle this offseason. The organization wants to retool, not rebuild, hoping to get a quick turnaround back to the postseason. However, the team doesn’t have many assets to play with on the trade market.

Plus, the free-agent market doesn’t offer much supply in terms of impact players who could lead a retool.

That’s why the team needs to think outside the box. And one of the ways the organization can do that is by looking for undrafted prospects. The Maple Leafs dipped their toes earlier this month, signing three NCAA free agents. While none of these free agents seem like high-end prospects, they could turn into something. At the very least, the organization is looking to replenish its prospect pipeline.

But there’s another way the organization could bring in high-end prospects. That path involves looking to Russia and the KHL.

Every year, high-end prospects look to North America once their KHL contracts expire. The top KHL free agent everyone is looking at is Vitali Pinchuk.

The 24-year-old, who currently plays for Dinamo Minsk, is believed to be on the radar for multiple organizations, RG.org reported. KHL specialist reporter Sergey Demidov offered these insights into the situation surrounding Pinchuk:

“Vitaly Pinchuk is drawing major NHL interest; According to an RG source, multiple NHL teams are lining up; Pinchuk has made it clear that all decisions will wait until his KHL season is over.”

It sounds like Pinchuk could be a hot commodity this summer. And a team like the Maple Leafs would do well to kick the tires on him.

Pinchuk Could Be Center Maple Leafs Are Looking For

One of the items on the Maple Leafs’ shopping list this summer is another center who could take the pressure off Auston Matthews and John Tavares. Pinchuk might just fit the bill.

The Belarus native is 6’3” and looks like a top-six scoring forward. In 65 games this season, he notched 31 goals and 66 points.

If those numbers could translate to NHL numbers, getting a 30-goal scorer slotting in behind Matthews would be something the Maple Leafs would gladly pay for.

However, signing Pinchuk wouldn’t be easy. There could be any number of teams vying for his services. That situation would make competition just a little harder.

There Is One Caveat Regrading Pinchuk

Pinchuk looks like a solid option for just about any NHL team, not just the Maple Leafs. But his potential has to be taken with a grain of salt.

All too often, promise and production in the NHL don’t always translate to NHL success. Over time, highly successful KHL stars wash out in North America. A recent example is Maxim Tsyplakov.

The New York Islanders signed Tsyplakov during the 2024 offseason. He was a former 30-goal scorer in the KHL, but just couldn’t carry that promise over to the NHL. He scored 10 goals in 77 games in his first season.

This year, he managed just two goals in 48 games between the Islanders and Devils. In fact, the Islanders dumped him on the Devils as part of the Ondrej Palat cap dump by New Jersey.

Tsyplakov is a cautionary tale that KHL stars don’t always pan out in the NHL. Still, the Maple Leafs would do well to check out Pinchuk. Even with the risk of washing out, Pinchuk could be just what Toronto needs moving forward.
