Maple Leafs $3.425M Winger Linked to Potential Summer Trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs made some notable changes to their roster ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline. With the Maple Leafs being on the wrong side of the playoff line, they traded forwards Nicolas Roy (Colorado Avalanche), Bobby McMann (Seattle Kraken), and Scott Laughton (Los Angeles Kings) during trade deadline week.

Yet, given how bad this season has gone for the Maple Leafs, it would not be shocking in the slightest if they continued to shake up their roster this summer. A few Maple Leafs players who were in the rumor mill leading up to the deadline who did not get moved included Brandon Carlo, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Simon Benoit. These three will be clear players to watch in trade talks during the summer.

Yet, with the deadline now passed, another Maple Leafs player has now come up in the rumor mill as a potential offseason trade candidate.

Maple Leafs Forward Matias Maccelli Named Trade Candidate for 2026 NHL Offseason

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Adam Gretz took a look at five pending restricted free agents (RFAs) who could be traded during the 2026 NHL offseason. Interestingly, Maple Leafs forward Matias Maccelli was among the players discussed.

“This entire season has been such a disappointment that they should be open for business on pretty much everybody outside of Auston Matthews and William Nylander. They need to keep accumulating more long-term assets and draft picks to help restock what has been depleted in recent years, and even though he is an RFA, there might be a market for Maccelli in a trade,” Gretz wrote.

When noting that Maccelli has had an up-and-down season with the Maple Leafs, it makes sense that he has been brought up as a trade candidate to watch this summer. However, he has still been making an impact, as he has 14 goals and 33 points in 57 games. With this and Maccelli being only 25 years old, it is possible that he could generate some interest if the Maple Leafs shop him.

Maccelli is in the final year of his three-year, $10.275 million contract. He could very well look for a bit of a raise from his current $3.425 million average annual value if he continues to stay hot for the Maple Leafs down the stretch. In his last nine games with the Maple Leafs, he has four goals and nine points.

Maple Leafs Could Also Look to Keep Maccelli Around

While Maccelli is being viewed as a potential trade candidate for the summer, it would also be understandable if Toronto tried to sign him to a contract extension. As noted above, he has been heating up for the Maple Leafs down the stretch. Furthermore, with Maccelli being on the right side of 30 for multiple more years, he could be a good young player for Toronto to keep around as they retool.

Ultimately, the Maple Leafs have a decision to make when it comes to Maccelli. If they do not view him as a long-term fit, he could be a decent trade chip for them to dangle during the summer.
