Man shot near Oakland homeless camp

OAKLAND — A 39-year-old man was shot Wednesday morning next to an East Oakland homeless camp, authorities said.

He was in stable condition at a hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg and other injuries.

The shooting was reported about 9:13 a.m. Wednesday in the 3500 block of East 9th Street, which is next to Interstate 880. There is a homeless camp at the location, made up mostly of vehicles parked on the south side of the street.

The man was found bleeding on the roadway, police said. It appeared he had also been hit with some kind of blunt object, authorities said.

It was not immediately known if he lived at the camp or was visiting someone there.

A motive for the shooting has not been confirmed. No arrests were announced.
