Man charged with crashing motorcycle, killing his own passenger in Union City

DUBLIN — The prosecution has begun against a Union City man accused of killing a passenger on his motorcycle in an August 2023 crash.

Carlos Peraza, 28, of Mebane, North Carolina, was charged with a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter last November, but he did not appear in court until late last month. At his first court appearance, Peraza pleaded not guilty and secured his $70,000 bail to keep him out of custody while the case is pending. He is next due in court in late June, records show.

Peraza is charged with killing Karen Lynn Prado, a 43-year-old woman who worked as a dance instructor in the East Bay. She left behind a 4-year-old son, according to her GoFundMe page.

“Karen was more than a friend; she was a light that brightened our lives with her infectious laughter, warm smile, and unwavering kindness,” the page says.

According to police in Union City, Peraza was driving a motorcycle through city streets and using the bike lane to avoid traffic when he collided with a red minivan. Both Peraza and Prado were ejected from the motorcycle, causing Prado and the motorcycle to crash into a boulder. She was pronounced dead at the accident site.
