Maintenance worker shot in lobby of Kenwood apartment building dies

A 42-year-old maintenance worker who was shot Thursday evening during an argument with a resident of a Kenwood apartment complex has died, officials say.

Police responded about 5:35 p.m. to a person shot at the building at 4554 S. Drexel Blvd. and found the victim in the lobby, shot in his left hand, right shoulder and chest, according to a police report.

Officers spoke to a witness who said after a resident of the building became embroiled in an argument with the victim, the resident returned to the lobby of the building and opened fire, hitting the 42-year-old man, the report said.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center initially in serious condition but died there at 8:06 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The shooter fled and was not in custody.


Area 1 detectives are investigating.
