Luis Arraez Exits Giants’ Game with Wrist Injury

The San Francisco Giants’ second baseman, Luis Arraez, exited the game in the 5th inning with a right wrist injury in the Giants’ 6-2 loss against the Baltimore Orioles.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Arraez got kicked in his right hand by Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers after Beavers jumped to avoid running into a ground ball hit by Leody Taveras. Arraez was able to finish the play and threw out Taveras at first base, but was in obvious pain. Beavers was called out for runner’s interference after clipping Arraez with his cleat.

The Giants’ trainers immediately went out after the play to check on Arraez, and the second baseman was initially able to stay in the game.

Arraez took his next at-bat in the top half of the 5th inning and even recorded a single to right field. But the Giants subbed in utility infielder Christian Koss off the bench for Arraez in the bottom half of the 5th inning.

Arraez did not return to the game, and it was later announced that Arraez suffered a right wrist contusion, according to Susan Slusser.

After the game, it was announced that Arraez’s injury is “day-to-day,” according to Susan Slusser.

Luis Arraez’s Impact On the Giants Offense

Arraez has established himself as one of the best contact hitters in the MLB ever since he joined the league in 2019. He won three batting titles from 2022 through 2024 and holds a career batting average of .317. Arraez’s most productive season was with the Miami Marlins in 2023, where he slashed .354/ .393/ .469 and posted a career-high 4.6 WAR.

The 8-year MLB veteran played most recently for the San Diego Padres, where he mainly started at first base and designated hitter, before signing with the Giants on a 1-year/ $12 million contract this offseason.

Arraez’s skill to hit for average has proved fruitful for the Giants, who were tied for 24th in the MLB in team batting average in 2025, according to Baseball Reference. He has started in all 15 games so far for the Giants, where he has played nearly every game at second base. After going 1-for-3 in tonight’s loss, Arraez raised his batting average to .304 and has a 0.4 WAR.

The left-handed swinging Arraez was starting to mesh well in a Giants’ offense that has improved lately. The Giants held a three-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 17-3, before tonight’s loss.

Who Could Replace Luis Arraez?

The Giants have two players on their current roster with experience at second base. Both Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss could man the position if Luis Arraez were to miss any time.

Schmitt has logged 91 games at second base in his 4 seasons with the Giants. He has also played 70 games at third base and 25 games at first base. But Schmitt has only played first base so far this season, but the Giants have used him as the designated hitter in the last two games. Schmitt is batting .324 with an .865 OPS.

Koss joined the Giants in 2025, where he played 47 games at second base. He also filled in at shortstop and third base last season. But Koss has only one hit in four at-bats this season.
