Los Angeles Lakers Announce Season-Ending Austin Reaves Injury Update

Austin Reaves of the Los Angeles Lakers has been ruled out for the rest of the regular season, the team announced on Saturday.

The news comes after Reaves suffered an oblique injury in the same game in which Luka Doncic went down for the rest of the season with a hamstring strain.

“Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique muscle injury and is out for the remainder of the regular season,” Shams Charania wrote on X.

In 51 games, Reaves averaged 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists on 49% shooting.

Reaves was seen holding his hip in the Lakers’ recent loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

As mentioned, it was the same game in which Doncic left with a hamstring injury, that put him out for the rest of the season.

After first reporting the news, Charania offered another Reaves injury update, one that does not bode well for the Lakers, or the star set to get a massive contract extension this summer.

“Lakers’ Austin Reaves is expected to miss four to six weeks with the Grade 2 oblique injury, sources tell ESPN. Devastating run of injuries to L.A.’s two leading scorers. Reaves and Luka Doncic are expected to be sidelined to begin the NBA playoffs,” the insider wrote.

As he reported, the Lakers’ top two scorers are now set to miss at least the start of the postseason, potentially longer.

Reaves was originally listed as questionable for the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Dallas Mavericks with an oblique/rib injury according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

With the team already reeling from the Luka Doncic left hamstring strain diagnosis that will sideline him indefinitely, Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick said Austin Reaves underwent an MRI on his left oblique/rib area Saturday, leaving the shooting guard questionable to play against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Reaves himself commented on the injury, albeit before it was announced that he would be out for the reason of the season.

“I went back to get a rebound, overextended a little bit, and I felt something,” Reaves explained after the game. “But I feel decent right now, so we’ll see.”

McMenamin reported Reaves underwent an MRI. However, while results weren’t known earlier on Saturday, he has since been ruled out for an extended period.

Reaves, a 27-year-old guard, previously missed 19 games earlier in the year for the Lakers with a calf injury.

It was already set to be tough sledding for the Lakers without Doncic.

But now, without both he and Reaves, Los Angeles will be missing more than 55 points per game in the final few games of the regular season.

While no comments from head coach JJ Redick or any other members of the team have yet been made, the gaffer previously said that the team would push forward without Doncic.

“Our mission, it hasn’t changed,” Redick said. “The rest of these guys and my staff, we’re going after the 3-seed and we’re going to try to win a playoff series. And we’ll see what happens with Luka.”
