The Detroit Lions saved about $15 million in cap space with the release of left tackle Taylor Decker.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, though, made it rather clear this week — the team should have preferred keeping Decker over the cap room.
On Wednesday, Knox argued the Lions will regret releasing the 2024 Pro Bowl left tackle.
“Decker will turn 33 in August and was more good than great this past season—Pro Football Focus ranked him 41st overall among tackles. Still, we’re talking about a left tackle who has started 140 games across 10 seasons,” wrote Knox.
The Lions may try moving Penei Sewell over to left tackle, but that will create a void on the right side. One way or another, though, Detroit is now a team with Super Bowl aspirations and a gaping hole on one side of its offensive line.”
The Lions officially cut Decker on Monday. His release marked the end of a 10-year tenure for the left tackle in Detroit.
Over a decade, Decker started 140 games with the Lions. That was after Detroit drafted him at No. 16 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Decker made one Pro Bowl during his stint in 2024. During that season, he helped the Lions post a franchise-best 15-2 regular season record.
