Lions Named Landing Spot for Former First-Round Quarterback

The Detroit Lions have an opening in their quarterback room this offseason, and one analyst suggests they could fill it with a former first-round pick.

The Lions have just two quarterbacks on the roster as the NFL draft approaches, with the team bringing back veteran Teddy Bridgewater to back up Jared Goff. They have traditionally kept at least three through the regular season and could face a big opportunity to bring in a high-level backup candidate.

Lions Could Target Anthony Richardson

Fansided’s Jake Beckman suggested the Lions could seek a trade for Anthony Richardson, who could provide some competition for veteran Bridgewater at the No. 2 spot. The report noted that the Indianapolis Colts have cooled on their former first-round pick, who has struggled with injuries and inconsistency.

“This is probably the least sexy trade that could happen during the draft, but it really needs to happen,” Beckman wrote. “Not just because Anthony Richardson is a freak of nature athlete with incredibly high potential that he’ll never reach, and he’s in the last year of his rookie contract… but also because the Colts need more and better draft picks.”

Beckman added that the Lions are among a small group of teams that could be interested in Richardson if the Colts are willing to put him on the trade block.

“The Lions have a pair of fourth-round picks and two quarterbacks (Goff and Bridgewater) who aren’t getting any older,” Beckman wrote. “The Browns and the Jets are always ripe to do something stupid with their quarterback room. The Steelers are sitting on three third-round picks and two fourth-round picks, and their quarterback room is a mess right now.”

Lions Could Take Another Crack at Quarterback

The Lions could go a different route at quarterback this offseason. CBS Sports analyst Josh Edwards suggested that the Lions could take Miami quarterback Carson Beck with a fourth-round draft pick, investing the No. 118 overall selection in a potential long-term backup for Goff.

NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein noted that Beck has endured a lot through his six years at the collegiate level.

“Three-year starter who has weathered his share of ups and downs,” Zierlein wrote. “Beck has NFL-caliber size and a lot of experience playing in high-leverage games. He recovered from 2024 UCL surgery on his throwing elbow, but he appeared to lose some drive velocity on deep balls and move throws.”

Zierlein added that Beck would be a mixed bag as a quarterback prospect, flashing some strong ability mixed in with deficiencies that would need to be addressed at the NFL level.

“He works through progressions at a good pace and can throw with anticipation, but he loses track of safeties, throwing into hazardous spots,” Zierlein wrote. “Beck’s decision-making showed more maturity in his final college season, but pressure can pull him back into old habits. He spins a catchable ball with a compact release, but spotty accuracy leads to pass breakups and a lower conversion rate on tight-window throws. Beck projects as a good backup with the potential to earn a starting job down the road, but he must continue developing game-managing instincts.”
