Ever since arriving in the Motor City because of the massive blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams in early 2021, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has found a home in the Motor City.
He’s led the Lions to their peak successes that they’ve enjoyed in decades, coming within two halves of football away from punching their ticket to the Super Bowl for the first time in team history, followed by a 15-2 campaign. And while both seasons ultimately ended in disappointment, there’s no reason to believe that Goff can’t lead the way again.
However, that hasn’t stopped the narrative from his former home in Los Angeles from repeating itself in the minds of some who used to cover him while he was a a member of the Rams.
Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff Continues To Face Shade From Rams Media
It wasn’t long ago that Brad Berreman of SideLion Report wondered if the Lions have hit their peak with Goff, and if the organization is having the same kind of doubts that Rams coach Sean McVay had.
“Los Angeles Rams’ head coach Sean McVay recognized he could not win a Super Bowl with Goff and pivoted away as soon as it made sense,” Berreman wrote. “It’s easy, and convenient, to believe Goff can lead the Lions to a Super Bowl/a Super Bowl win. But it’s reasonable to wonder if, and question if, he truly can. Those latter thoughts could be looming on an uncomfortable horizon some Lions’ fans would rather ignore.”
According to Rams Insider Leigh Oleszczak of Ramblin’ Fan, this is nothing new for Rams fans.
“Rams fans aren’t surprised in the slightest to hear this. Goff wasn’t terrible during his time as Los Angeles’ quarterback but it was clear that he wasn’t the right guy to help lead Sean McVay’s offense,” Oleszczak wrote. “The Rams were never going to be where they wanted to be if they had stuck with Goff.”
Oleszczak continued:
“The good news is that the trade has worked out well for both sides. Stafford got to play for a contender and showed what he can do when on a contending team while Goff got to go somewhere he was appreciated. Goff has mostly played well for the Lions but even having the top seed in the NFC in the 2024 playoffs wasn’t enough to get Detroit to its first Super Bowl.”
Jared Goff Is Going Nowhere, According To Head Coach Dan Campbell
The nature of fandom in professional sports means that there will be some who think that the Lions would be better served by moving on from Goff.
However, head coach Dan Campbell recently put any speculation as to the future of Goff with the Lions to rest by emphatically insisting that he’s here to stay.
“Jared Goff is a stud. He’s an absolute stud,” Campbell said. “We’re fortunate to have him as a quarterback. He’s a winning quarterback in this league. He played at a very high level all season long. He played even better than he played the year before, and he’s continued to play better. We’re thankful to have him. I’m thankful to have him. He’s an absolute stud, he’s a pro. He’s going nowhere.”
