Lions Announced ‘Significant’ Re-Signing in Secondary

The Detroit Lions will bring back veteran safety Avonte Maddox next season.

The Lions announced on social media Monday afternoon the team agreed to a contract with Maddox. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Maddox played in 14 games for the Lions last season. He posted 32 combined tackles, including one tackle for loss. Maddox also had four pass defenses, one interception and one forced fumble.

The veteran defensive back made three starts for Detroit during the 2025 campaign.

After the team announced Maddox’s return Monday, MLive.com’s Kory Woods called the re-signing “significant” for the Lions secondary.

Maddox played 342 defensive snaps for the Lions last season. He’s played at least that amount on defense in all of his eight NFL campaigns but one.

Maddox will also bring back his special teams experience to Detroit next season. He lined up for 88 special teams snaps during 2025.
