Lindsey Vonn News Emerges After Olympic Skier’s Crash and Injury

The 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony is set for Friday, February 6, at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, and Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn was scheduled to be there. But, on Friday, January 30, the alpine ski racer suffered a scary incident during a World Cup race in Switzerland, which resulted in an injury.

Even though the Olympics don’t start for several days, the pre-Olympic action is already taking place. Before the Olympics, athletes, of course, have to compete to get there and also prep before they go. That’s partly what got Vonn, 41, into this situation.

During the incident, Vonn appeared to lose control while trying to land a jump during her last run. After the moment, she grabbed her left knee and appeared injured and in pain, eventually limping into a medical tent for evaluation. After the incident, Vonn was airlifted from the course to get immediate medical attention.

Now, an injury update has emerged about her health and likelihood of participating in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

After the incident, on Friday, January 30, Vonn took to social media to offer an update. She said that despite her crash, she’s not ruling out participating at the Olympics

“I crashed today in the Downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee. I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams,” she announced on social media. “This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback.”

She added that her “Olympic dream is not over” and that “it’s not over until it’s over…”

Also following the incident, International Ski and Snowboard Federation CEO Urs Lehmann told reporters at that Vonn “hurt her knee” but wouldn’t comment on her injury or if it meant she wouldn’t be able to participation in the Olympics.

“I don’t know if it’s really heavy and (if) she won’t miss the Olympics,” Lehmann said. “Let’s wait for what the doctors are saying.”

Vonn’s coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, told Reuters news outlet that Vonn was being evaluated by medical professionals.

“She has some pain so it’s better to have some checks, the physio did some checks they seemed OK but there were things he was not 100% sure so it was good to have it checked (at the hospital),” Svindal said.

Lindsey Vonn Came Back From Adversity Before

The official Olympics website discusses how Vonn has come back from injury before. “At the age of 40 and months after undergoing partial knee replacement surgery, U.S. ski legend Lindsey Vonn made her comeback to World Cup racing from an absence of close to six years,” it states.

“Before announcing her retirement in February 2019, having won downhill bronze at her eighth World Championship at Åre, Sweden, Vonn had cemented her reputation as the greatest female speed skier in history,” the site adds. “In her 15 years on the World Cup circuit, she won no fewer than 20 World Cup crystal globes (tied for most with Marcel Hirscher) and a record 43 downhill races.”
