LaMelo Ball Under Fire For Controversial Play on Bam Adebayo’s Injury

LaMelo Ball became part of the biggest controversy of the Charlotte Hornets’ play-in game Tuesday night after a disputed sequence involving Bam Adebayo sent the Miami Heat star to the locker room.

Adebayo was later ruled out for the rest of the game.

The play mattered immediately because this was not a routine regular-season moment. Charlotte was facing Miami in a win-or-go-home Eastern Conference play-in game, and any injury to a star on either side had the potential to swing the night. Ball, while on the floor, appeared to swipe at Adebayo’s foot, causing the Heat big man to fall backward hard before limping off in the second quarter.

Several posts circulating during the game helped fuel the reaction. ESPN’s NBA account said Ball “appeared to grab” Adebayo’s ankle on the play, while longtime Heat reporter Ira Winderman wrote that he would “love to be in the room at halftime when Spoelstra sees Ball’s trip of Adebayo.” Those reactions quickly turned the sequence into a flashpoint as the game continued.

Why the LaMelo Ball Play Drew So Much Attention

The controversy here is not hard to understand, especially considering Ball drew attention before the game after his brother called him the best player in the NBA.

Adebayo was trying to save the ball near the sideline when the sequence unfolded, and the replay angle that spread online made it look as if Ball reached out while down on the court and caught Adebayo low. Ball appeared to take a swipe at Adebayo’s left foot, with Adebayo then crashing onto his back and remaining down until play was stopped.

That is the kind of play that is always going to trigger a strong reaction in a high-stakes game, especially when the player hurt is a star. Adebayo is not just another starter for Miami. He is one of the Heat’s most important players on both ends, so the sequence immediately became bigger than a single loose-ball scramble.

From the Hornets’ side, it also put Ball under a brighter spotlight than usual. Charlotte has waited a long time to get back into meaningful postseason basketball, and this was supposed to be a showcase game. Instead, one sequence turned into the talking point fans on both sides were arguing about in real time.

The Timing Made It Even Bigger

The live game log shows Adebayo’s exit came in the second quarter, with ESPN’s game page listing him as questionable with a back issue after the sequence. At that point, the game was still tight, which only increased the importance of the moment.

That matters because controversy lands differently when it changes the shape of a close elimination game. If Adebayo had to miss significant time, Miami would lose its defensive anchor and one of its top offensive hubs. If Charlotte went on to win, this sequence was always likely to become part of the postgame conversation.

That does not automatically mean intent can be proven from replay alone. But the visual, the reaction from media members and the immediate result — Adebayo going to the locker room — were enough to make Ball a central figure in the story the rest of the night.
