Lakers Urged to Poach $30 Million Wing Upgrade From Rivals

With league-leading cap space projected this offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers are positioned to be one of the NBA’s most aggressive teams in reshaping their roster.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Los Angeles could enter the summer with approximately $51 million in cap space, even after factoring in Austin Reaves’ $20.9 million free agent hold.

While Reaves is widely expected to return, the Lakers’ true level of financial flexibility hinges on LeBron James’ decision in free agency.

If James departs, Los Angeles would gain the freedom to aggressively pursue multiple high-impact additions and accelerate the next phase of roster construction, with several potential targets already emerging.

Lakers Expected to Aggressively Pursue Wing Upgrades in Free Agency

NBA insider Jake Fischer and ESPN’s Dave McMenamin have both reported that the Lakers could leverage their cap space to pursue restricted free agents, potentially forcing rival teams into difficult financial decisions by presenting aggressive offer sheets.

Denver Nuggets wing Peyton Watson and Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason were both identified by Fischer and McMenamin as players firmly on the Lakers’ radar.

Wing upgrades were already a priority at the trade deadline, with Luke Kennard acquired on an expiring deal to improve perimeter shooting. That focus now appears set to continue into the offseason.

Andrew Wiggins, an unrestricted free agent, is another name McMenamin mentioned. However, Lake Show Life’s Jordanna Clark believes the Lakers should look even closer to home.

Clark pointed to Los Angeles Clippers forward Derrick Jones Jr. as an ideal target, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the Clippers’ long-term direction.

“LA could offload a few more veterans this summer, including Derrick Jones Jr,” Clark wrote. “He just so happens to be the player that the Lakers need, giving them a point-of-attack defender who can knock down outside shots at a decent rate.”

“His defense is his bread-and-butter, though. It’s just a bonus that he already has a relationship with Luka, since the two helped lead the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2024, in what was Jones’ one and only season in Dallas. The forward started every playoff game during that miraculous run.”

Derrick Jones Jr.’s Two-Way Profile Aligns With Roster Vision

Through 25 games this season, Jones is averaging a career-high 10.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.9% from the field and a career-best 36.5% from three-point range.

The Lakers’ reported interest in players such as Watson, Eason, and Wiggins signals a clear priority on acquiring versatile two-way wings, and Jones fits that mold perfectly.

His defensive versatility, elite athleticism, and improving perimeter shooting make him a natural fit alongside Luka Doncic, with whom he has already developed chemistry during their time with the Dallas Mavericks in 2023-24.

His ability to complement high-usage creators without demanding touches adds further value.

Clark described the 29-year-old as “one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, a talent that would be wasted if he stays with the Clippers.”

Jones is currently in the second year of a three-year, $30 million contract, earning $10 million this season and $10.4 million in 2026-27 before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

If the Clippers pivot towards a rebuild, Jones could emerge as a logical trade candidate. Whether they would entertain a deal with the Lakers, however, remains uncertain.

After holding limited tradable draft capital at the deadline, the Lakers are expected to regain significant flexibility this summer, with three first-round picks in 2026, 2031, and 2033 projected to become available in trade discussions.

That added leverage could open the door to a wide range of roster upgrades.

While an ambitious “all-out” pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to headline the offseason, the Lakers are also likely to explore multiple complementary additions if that pursuit falls short.

In that scenario, players like Jones could emerge as realistic and impactful targets.
