Lakers’ Luka Doncic to Be Suspended One Game

Hoping to extend their winning streak to nine games, the Los Angeles Lakers are in the midst of a back-and-forth game against the Orlando Magic. Superstar guard Luka Doncic has already posted another 30-point game, but his effort didn’t come without one sore spot. 

Doncic has been known to sometimes let his emotions get the best of him. Entering Saturday’s contest with already 15 technical fouls to his name, the last thing L.A. wanted was for its NBA MVP candidate to pick up a 16th technical. 

Luka Doncic is Set to Be Suspended One Game

During the third quarter of tonight’s game in Orlando, Doncic got into a verbal battle with Magic center Goga Bitadze, resulting in a technical foul for the Lakers star and his 16th of the season. 

Luka Doncic is called for a technical foul with 1:19 to go in the 3rd Q, along with Goga Bitadze. If the tech is not rescinded after the game, it will be his 16th and will cost him a one-game suspension when LAL plays in DET on Monday.

Being tagged with 16 techs is grounds for suspension; therefore, Doncic will miss the Lakers’ road game against the Detroit Pistons. Should the technical stand, Doncic’s absence against the East’s top seed can potentially be a massive momentum blow. 

There is still a narrow window for this situation to change, however. Technical fouls can be reviewed and rescinded by the league office, especially in cases where the interaction is nonegregious. Given that this one stemmed from a brief exchange, the kind we see on seemingly a nightly basis, the NBA could pull this tech.

Even if it stands, this is not unfamiliar territory for Doncic. His history shows a pattern of flirting with the suspension threshold, often piling up technicals arguing with the officials after he felt he was fouled on a shot. 

Lakers fans are hoping they don’t have to see any of that in April and May.

Should L.A. Worry About Doncic’s Emotions? 

There is a competitive edge that fuels Doncic’s production, and it is a major reason he continues to deliver nights like this one. At the same time, that same intensity can create avoidable setbacks, particularly under rules that leave little margin for error once the technical count climbs this high. One more outburst down the line could lead to another absence, and that is not something a contending team can afford to overlook.

For now, the focus shifts to whether the league steps in before the Lakers face the Pistons. If not, Los Angeles will have to move forward without its primary engine for at least one night.

On another note, if Doncic’s 16th technical isn’t rescinded, he’ll miss a 13th game this season, leaving him with an even slimmer margin regarding the 65-game rule. Of course, players are not eligible for regular season awards and accolades if they miss more than 16 games.

A small knick-knack injury here or there that forces Doncic to sit out a couple of games could push him over the limit. And then, everyone will remember that random technical he picked up on some Saturday night that could’ve (and should’ve) been avoided. 

For now, the Lakers are in a tough clutch-time contest with the Magic. Securing this win will mean even more if Doncic must observe a one-game suspension.
