It’s safe to say that the next few months are going to be chaotic for the Los Angeles Lakers. In the immediate future, their playoff hopes have been dealt a major blow, as both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are set to miss their upcoming first-round series due to injuries. Once the season eventually comes to an end, Los Angeles is going to have to figure out what the future holds for legendary forward LeBron James.
Reports are suggesting that James could leave the Lakers, so while the team has to focus on finding a way to re-sign Reaves, it also could look for another star to bring to town. Disgruntled Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has been floated as a potential option, but according to new rumors, it sounds like he isn’t interested in landing with Los Angeles.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Reportedly Not Interested in Trade to the Lakers
If Lakers fans think that the speculation surrounding James has been bad, they need only to look at the Bucks’ situation with Antetokounmpo. From pretty much the start of the season, Antetokounmpo’s name has popped up in trade rumors, and the relationship between the two sides has devolved to the point where the team seemingly is refusing to play him down the stretch of the regular season.
At this stage of the game, it seems inevitable that Antetokounmpo will be traded over the offseason after Milwaukee’s front office held off on dealing him at the trade deadline, in hopes of getting a better return for him after the 2025-26 season. Depending on how things unfold for the Lakers this offseason, they could conceivably be among the teams in the hunt for Antetokounmpo.
The problem, however, is that it does not appear he has much of a desire to play for L.A. According to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN, he claims that he had been told by several folks from around the NBA that Antetokounmpo does not want to play for the Lakers, which has seemingly tanked their hopes of acquiring him over the offseason.
“I was told he doesn’t want to be in L.A.,” Smith revealed on “First Take.”

Smith isn’t exactly the most reliable source for NBA rumors, but he is plugged in when it comes to finding out things that the public does not know about. There is still a lot of time for things to change, especially once the offseason actually gets underway, but for the time being, it doesn’t look like Antetokounmpo will be finding his way to Los Angeles.
Truth be told, that may not be the worst development in the world, as the Lakers’ front office can focus on keeping Reaves around and surrounding him and Doncic with a talented supporting cast. James’ future also looms large, but for the time being, his main objective involves finding a way to keep Los Angeles alive long enough in the playoffs for his two star teammates to get back on the court.
