Lakers Get Surprising LeBron James News Ahead of Free Agency

The Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as betting favorites to re-sign LeBron James for a ninth season in 2026-27, amid rumors that the 41-year-old may return to his hometown franchise, the Cleveland Cavaliers, or retire.

Per Kalshi, there’s a 58% chance that James will either remain with the Lakers or retire, while there’s a 26% chance the NBA’s all-time leading scorer will return to the Cavaliers. Interestingly, the Lakers/retire probablity rate has jumped eight points in the last 24 hours, likely influenced by James’ comments in his exit interview.

Fox Sports also has the option of Lakers/retires (+108) at the top of the heap, followed by the Cavaliers (+213) and Golden State Warriors (+669).

LeBron James Next Team Odds

Elsewhere, Polymarket gives the Lakers a 56% chance of retaining James, while the Cavaliers (36%), Miami Heat (26%) and Warriors (9%) round off the top four.

Online sportsbook BET99 also favors the Lakers (+110) as LeBron James’ next team.

Per multiple Lakers insiders, James is still undecided on his next destination, something he expressed at the end of his record-breaking 23rd season.

“What my future holds, I don’t know,” James said after Monday’s loss.

“Obviously, we’re still fresh from losing. I don’t know what the future holds for me as it stands right now tonight.

“I got a lot of time, I’ll sit back and recalibrate with my family. Talk with them, spend some time with them and when the time comes, you guys will know.”

Lakers Wish to Re-Sign LeBron James

The Lakers expressed their desire to re-sign free agents LeBron James and Austin Reaves on Tuesday, aiming to keep their Luka Doncic-led Big 3 intact.

“We want that core to be back together,” Lakers head coach JJ Redick said in his exit interview on Tuesday, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

“All three of those guys showed a lot of growth this year. I think a lot has been made about Luka’s fitness level and his dedication to that. He was great throughout the season. He’s still in fantastic shape six weeks after an injury. But he’s also grown as a leader.”

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka praised James as well.

“He’s an incredible partner,” Pelinka said of James.

“His basketball IQ on the court is something we get to see as fans. JJ and I get to see his basketball knowledge in terms of other players in the league and the way he wants to play and who he wants to play with. His knowledge base is vast and so those collaborations with him are really inspirational.”

James is reportedly unlikely to receive a max contract from the Lakers—or from rumored suitors like the Cavaliers and Warriors—given his age and the league’s salary-cap constraints. However, the Lakers, who own his Bird Rights, could offer him the most money, even if doing so may preclude them from signing other free agents. The Lakers could reportedly open around $50M in cap space if they let James walk and re-sign Reaves, who has a $20.9M cap hold.
