Lakers Get Massive Kevin Durant Update Just Before Game 4 With Sweep on Horizon

The outlook for Kevin Durant has shifted — and it may significantly alter Game 4.

After days of uncertainty surrounding his availability, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Sunday that the Houston Rockets star is expected to miss Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers as he continues to recover from a sprained ankle that includes a bone bruise.

“Houston’s Kevin Durant is expected to miss Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell ESPN,” Charania wrote. “Durant has a bone bruise in his sprained ankle, which would sideline him 2 to 3 weeks in season. He’s had around-the-clock treatment to play, but has not been cleared by doctors.

The update provides the clearest indication yet that Durant’s recovery timeline may extend beyond the immediate urgency of Houston’s first-round series.

Kevin Durant Injury Timeline Becomes Clearer

Durant had previously been listed as a game-time decision, with Rockets coach Ime Udoka describing his status as “up in the air” following Game 3.

Behind the scenes, Durant had been undergoing intensive, around-the-clock treatment, including aquatic therapy and reduced-impact work designed to manage swelling and maintain conditioning.

But Charania’s report introduces a critical detail: the presence of a bone bruise alongside the ankle sprain — a combination that typically requires a longer recovery window.

In a regular-season context, the injury could sideline a player for two to three weeks, raising questions about how much risk would be involved in accelerating that timeline during the playoffs.

Durant Not Cleared Despite Aggressive Rehab

The new development also underscores a key distinction in Durant’s recovery: effort has not been the issue.

“Durant came into the Rockets facility this morning for his rehab with the team’s medical staff and participated in film session and meetings with teammates. The bone bruise has created swelling, stiffness and lack of mobility in the ankle, sources said. Houston will face a 3-0 series deficit with Durant out tonight,” Charania added.

Udoka previously detailed a rigorous rehab routine that included pool work, ice treatment and controlled movement exercises. Durant had been attempting to ramp up activity in hopes of returning quickly.

Still, clearance ultimately rests with team doctors and league protocol.

As of Sunday, that clearance has not come.

The gap between progress and availability highlights the challenge facing Houston — balancing a potential elimination game with the long-term health of one of its most important players.

Rockets Face Elimination Without Durant

Houston enters Game 4 trailing 3-0 in the series, putting the team on the brink of elimination.

Without Durant, the Rockets have struggled to match the Lakers’ offensive consistency and late-game execution. His absence has forced adjustments across the rotation, including increased responsibilities for younger players.

While the Rockets showed resilience in stretches of Game 3, the lack of a primary scoring option has remained a defining factor in the series.

Lakers in Position to Close Out Series

For the Lakers, the update represents a significant development.

Los Angeles has already built a commanding lead in the series despite playing without Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves for the past three weeks. The team has relied on depth, defensive pressure and timely scoring to control the matchup.

With Durant now unlikely to play, the Lakers enter Game 4 with a clear opportunity to complete the sweep.

Still, the situation remains fluid.

Durant’s recovery has been described as day-to-day, and any change in his status would immediately reshape the series.

For now, however, the latest update suggests that Game 4 may proceed without him — a development that could ultimately define how the series ends.
