Lakers Face Backlash Over Playoff Move as Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves Remain Out

The Los Angeles Lakers drew immediate backlash after announcing an expansion of courtside seating for the postseason, a move that many fans questioned, given the team’s current injury situation and uncertain playoff outlook.

The franchise revealed plans to introduce a second row of courtside seating — “Courtside Reserve” — for playoff games, expanding one of the most exclusive sections inside the arena. The new seats will include premium amenities such as in-seat food and beverage service and VIP access, part of an effort to enhance the in-arena experience during high-demand postseason matchups.

But the announcement quickly shifted attention online, where fans voiced frustration over both the timing and optics of the decision.

Fans Question Timing Amid Key Injuries

Much of the criticism centered on the Lakers’ current roster challenges, particularly injuries to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.

“More people are about to watch them get embarrassed,” one fan wrote.

“Wow, you can watch them lose from closer and for more money,” another added.

Several fans pointed directly to the team’s injury situation when reacting to the announcement.

“Makes sense. With Luka and AR out, they need to maximize profits,” one post read.

Others were more blunt in their assessment of the team’s postseason chances.

“Just to get bounced in the first round,” one fan wrote. “Nice for all two games.”

The reactions highlighted a disconnect between the franchise’s off-court initiative and the current on-court uncertainty as the regular season winds down.

Injuries Have Shifted Lakers’ Outlook

The backlash comes as the Lakers continue to deal with significant injuries to two of their primary offensive players.

According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, Reaves is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a Grade 2 oblique strain and could be sidelined for four to six weeks, placing his availability for the first round of the playoffs in doubt.

Reaves averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 51 games this season, emerging as a key secondary playmaker.

Dončić has also been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. He has traveled to Spain to undergo specialized treatment aimed at accelerating his recovery timeline.

Dončić averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds in 64 games and has been central to the Lakers’ offensive production.

With both players sidelined, the team has leaned more heavily on LeBron James to carry the scoring load.

Lakers Slip in Standings Amid Mounting Injuries

The injuries have already impacted the standings.

Since Dončić and Reaves went down, the Lakers have slipped out of the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and are now tied with the Houston Rockets in the 4-5 range. They trail the Denver Nuggets by 1 1/2 games for third place with only a few games remaining in the regular season.

That shift increases the likelihood of a more difficult playoff path, including the possibility of opening the postseason without home-court advantage.

Ownership and Business Decisions Under Scrutiny

The reaction also comes against the backdrop of a recent ownership change.

Mark Walter, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, purchased the Lakers last year in a deal that valued the franchise at $10 billion — the highest control-sale price in the history of team sports.

The courtside expansion reflects a continued emphasis on premium experiences and revenue opportunities during marquee events like the playoffs.

Some fans, however, viewed the move differently.

“More seats for celebrities who don’t care about the game,” one fan wrote.

Another added, “These new owners are greedier.”

High-Stakes Finish Ahead

Despite the backlash, the Lakers remain firmly in the playoff picture, with seeding still to be determined in the final days of the regular season.

How the team performs without Dončić and Reaves — and whether either can return during the postseason — will shape both expectations and perception moving forward.

For now, the reaction has been immediate and pointed, adding another layer of pressure as the Lakers head into a critical stretch of the season.
