After another disappointing season, in which the Arizona Cardinals finished the 2025 campaign with an ugly 3-14 record, tying a league-worst with the Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets, the struggling franchise has decided to shake things up.
The first order of business for the Cardinals‘ brass was firing head coach Jonathan Gannon, after he racked up a disappointing record of 15-36 during his forgettable stint in Arizona. The team has now brought in former Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur to be the new leader on the sideline, and the next task was figuring out what to do with former No. 1 overall pick and star quarterback Kyler Murray.
Kyler Murray Reacts to Being Released by Cardinals

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Cardinals intend to release Murray and have let him know of their decision.
The consensus seemed to be that the Cardinals would trade Murray at some point during the NFL offseason, but clearly, nothing has come to fruition on that front, at least as of right now.
After the news surfaced, Murray promptly took to social media to say his goodbyes to those who supported him during his time in Arizona.
“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Murray wrote on his X account on Tuesday. “I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77-year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best. I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.”
Murray only played in five games during the 2025 NFL season after suffering a foot injury in Week 5, which ultimately cost him the rest of the season and resulted in him playing his last game for the Cardinals.
He finished with 962 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Murray also rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown.
Cardinals Linked to Veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo

With the Cardinals moving on from Murray, the attention turns to whom the team might target to be the former No. 1 overall pick’s replacement in Arizona.
Although an ideal candidate would be Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis, the team might have to settle for a journeyman veteran quarterback, with Los Angeles Rams backup Jimmy Garoppolo being rumored to be linked to the Cardinals, via Ben Volin of The Boston Globe.
Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort helped draft Garoppolo for the Patriots in 2014, and new coach Mike LaFleur and Garoppolo spent the last two years with the Rams.
It’ll be interesting to see how this quarterback situation in Arizona develops moving forward and who will ultimately be under center for the Cardinals during the 2026 NFL season.
