The Dominican Republic had a plethora of chances during its 2-1 loss to Team USA in the WBC semifinal to plate across more than one run, but USA’s pitching proved to be the dominant factor in the game, and two clutch solo home runs by Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony were the difference in the game.
After a questionable strike three call to end the game, the Dominican Republic’s star slugger, Juan Soto, spoke with ESPN’s Jeff Passan after the game and voiced his opinion on the outcome and who he believes is the best team in baseball.

Juan Soto’s Message After Team Dominican Republic’s Loss to USA
GettyTeam Dominican Republic will take on Team Nicaragua to open the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Very few players on the DR team decided to speak to the media, but Juan Soto got asked a few questions by MLB reporter Jeff Passan, and here is one statement he made after the loss:
“We showed the world who’s the best team in baseball. That’s all I got to say.”
The immediate and obvious reaction is that, well, Juan Soto and the rest of the Dominican team had plenty of opportunities. Sure, there were some bad calls, but they transpired for both teams.
Soto has a case, but the WBC semifinal wasn’t a great example of ‘showing the world who’s the best team’. The DR had been averaging more than 10 runs per game throughout the tournament, and hit a record 15 home runs in the six games they played.

Venezuela and Italy will square off on Monday with a trip to the WBC final on the line. The reports indicate that McLean will get the start, with a chance to have a better outing than his first. There’s a chance it could be a rematch between Italy and Team USA, who played just last week. McLean gave up a couple of home runs in that start, which proved to be the difference in the game.
