Josh Sargent Reacts After Scoring First Goal for Toronto FC

Josh Sargent opened up about scoring his first goal for Toronto FC, which ended up being the game-winner. He spoke about settling in with his new club and the emotions he felt after scoring.

It was an eventful afternoon, as Toronto came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Colorado Rapids 3-2. Sargent’s goal came in the 85th minute, when a TFC corner led to him heading the ball into the back of the net. Toronto then defended the lead for the final minutes to secure both the win and three points.

The American striker joined the club after a record MLS transfer fee was paid to Norwich City FC. With that came high expectations from TFC supporters.

Sargent has taken time to adapt to the league. However, he can now breathe a sigh of relief after scoring his first goal for Toronto.

“[It was a] big relief. It’s been a while since I’ve scored. And yeah, after I missed that first one in the first half, I was pretty frustrated. So I would’ve been upset if I didn’t get a goal by the end of the game,” Sargent told reporters post-game. “[I am] just very happy. Very happy that the fans have been so good and have been so supportive since I’ve gotten here. And yeah, great to get a goal and hopefully more to come.”

He highlighted the response from his teammates while playing with a two-goal deficit and a man down. He emphasized that they did not give up and remained determined to find a way to win.

“[It was a] very crazy game. I think [it was] very back and forth, but I think our mentality from the start was good. Even going down two goals like that, I think it was a very good response from the team,” Sargent told reporters post-game. “I think everybody put their heads down, kept working hard, kept believing in ourselves and got the result in the end.”

Toronto head coach Robin Fraser praised Sargent’s performance in the club’s 3-2 victory over Colorado. He highlighted key areas of the American’s game that make him a difference-maker.

Fraser noted that Sargent is dangerous when he finds space and believes the best is yet to come.

“[Sargent’s] holdup play is excellent. He’s very good tidy in tight spaces, but he also has really good timing as to when to get forward and decisions about how can he get himself in front of the goal,” Fraser told reporters post-game. “Obviously the heading ability, because we saw it last week as well. So if he gets opportunities, he’s extremely dangerous there.”
