Jon Rahm Reveals How a Heated Argument With His Caddie at Augusta Sparked His LIV Golf Win

Jon Rahm said a tense exchange with longtime caddie Adam Hayes during Masters week helped trigger the turnaround that led to his dominant victory at LIV Golf Mexico City. The former Masters champion explained that confusion over a technical point nearly became a heated argument before the issue was finally resolved.

Rahm entered Augusta National as one of the pre-tournament favorites but opened with a 78, matching the worst major championship round of his career. He later finished tied for 38th after rounds of 70, 73, and 68. One week later, the Spaniard responded with a six-shot win at Club de Golf Chapultepec, finishing at 21-under and separating himself from the field.

The timing made Rahm’s comments significant, especially as LIV Golf continues its 2026 season with growing attention on its top players. Rahm credited the breakthrough directly to the conversation with Hayes. “Once it clicked what he was trying to say and what I needed to work on on that range session Saturday afternoon, it was so much better,” Rahm said.

Rahm detailed the moment after his Mexico City victory, saying the disagreement happened on the putting green at Augusta.

“Yeah, yeah. Adam and I nearly got in a heated argument on Saturday on the putting green at Augusta when he was trying to explain something and I wasn’t fully understanding,” Rahm said.

The issue centered on a swing concept that Rahm initially did not understand. Once the message became clear during a Saturday range session later, he said his game immediately improved.

“Sunday at Augusta I played much better golf, and it’s only gotten a little bit easier since then,” Rahm said.

Rahm closed the Masters with a final-round 68, his best score of the week. While he was never in contention for a second green jacket, the round appeared to restore confidence heading into LIV Golf’s next stop.

He also noted that carrying a technical thought during competition can be difficult.

“But it’s not always the easiest to have a swing thought while playing, but this one obviously seemed to work out,” Rahm said.

Rahm did not specify the exact technical adjustment, and he had previously described the issue as “too complicated” to fully explain.

The benefits of that adjustment were clear in Mexico City.

Rahm won by six shots over fellow Spaniard David Puig, producing his second LIV Golf win of the 2026 season and fourth since joining the circuit in December 2023. He opened the final round with a fast start, playing his first four holes in five under par before pulling away from the field.

After the victory, Rahm reflected on how unlikely the turnaround seemed only days earlier.

“If you had told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’d be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not have believed you because of how bad I played,” he said.

The win also strengthened Rahm’s lead in LIV Golf’s individual standings ahead of Bryson DeChambeau. It moved him back inside the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in more than two years.

Hayes has been on Rahm’s bag since 2016 and remains the only caddie Rahm has used as a professional. Their partnership has already produced major titles at the 2021 U.S. Open and 2023 Masters.

Rahm publicly acknowledged that bond after winning at Augusta in 2023.

“I want to start with the man who spends more time with me than my own wife and kids: my caddie, Adam Hayes,” Rahm said during that victory celebration.

The latest episode suggests the relationship still works through honesty and direct communication, even when disagreements surface.

For Rahm, the result was immediate. A difficult week at Augusta turned into one of his most convincing wins since joining LIV Golf, driven by a correction that began with friction and ended with a trophy.
